Airfix 1/24 Harriers, beany,Sir T, FredK, Splash, MarkyM607

Post by Stuart »

Hi Guys,

This is the build thread for the mighty Airfix 1/24 Harrier SB. All 1/24 Harrier (including the Sea Harrier) kits made by Airfix are allowed, plus any AM stuff that you wish to add.

Our four interpid builders are myself, FredK, Spalsh and MarkyM607. We are planning to start around the first of October 2014 with no real end date in mind, so please introduce your builds when you feel like it guys, and I'll list them in this post. it'd be good if you could mention what your intentions are - e.g. I'm planning on making an AV-8A or GR.3, I have a resin seat and intakes and I will be attaching the wing perminantly, so I won't be detailing the engine bay.

Looking forward to cracking on with it. (I think  )

Cheers

Stuart

I've got my Harrier ready and my resin bits in. My plan is to build it and mark it as a GR3 used in Operation Corporate, aka the Falklands War of 1982. Resin bits are from Heritage, new intakes, cockpit/Ej seat and gun pods. Heaps of reference books at the ready too.
I hope to do to some modest detailing, including wiring and lights - this may be a problem as I think I'd like to try to have the wings come off, so two different circuits or a hidden connector somewhere betwixt wing and fuselage.
Just a day over 2 weeks to start. I'll probably start about the 1st as I'm busy the weekend before [too soon] and the weekend after.

PS; Is we allowing the Sea Harrier?
Al speling misteaks aer all mi own werk..
Its not just how good your painting is, its how good the touch-ups are too.

Hi Fred -thats sounds a cool build.

And yes indeed we are including the 1/24 Sea Harrier if you have one.

I have one, and I've ordered up the resin parts for it too. If all goes ok I'll do the Shar after the GR3.

Cool - they'd look good sitting next to each other.

They would, but not a chance! I have no room for displaying them at home, so they'll get put into custom made wood boxes and only brought out to shows - and we only do about 6 in a year here, of which I may get to 3.
The fun is in the building.

Right'o , so here's my Introduction.

I have the recent Airfix Red Box release of the GR.3/AV-8A, along with a Heritage M.B bang seat and replacement intakes. The kit was a present from a friend last Christmas and I've been meaning to build it ever since. I think he's more excitied to see it finished than I am.

I was planning on building a GR.3, but after collecting a few referance books and looking at the pictures I've changed my mind, instead I'm going to build it as a USMC AV-8A. You don't see many AV-8s built up so I thought it'd make a nice change.

I'm planning on attaching the wing so I won't be detailing the engine bay, but I will work on the cockpit and U/C bays. I'm also thinking about loading it with an example of each weapon option provided in the kit, so it might look a bit odd - i'm still mulling this over.

Anyway - pictures to follow.

Cheers

Hi Guys.

I'm still in with an OOB GR3 build subject to me never managing to keep it OOB :-D

Come to think of it I don't like the GR3's nose, so it might be a GR1 and probably not OOB because of those horrid intakes  . If this makes me sound like I'm unsure about what I'm doing  , then that's probably because I'm not sure what I'm doing  .

OK I have come up with a cunning plan, I'm going to follow the rest and watch how you all do it :-D .

Now where did I put that extra large tub of filler, as I think I might need it.

Oh yes, a bunch of big Harriers - this should make for a great SB :-D You guys have obviously got bigger display cabinets than yours truly (who says size doesn't matter :ha: ) and I look forward to seeing your builds.

Cool links Splash - really useful.

Mind you, the one or two pictures I really need I can't seem to find, and that's a internal view of the cockpit facing backwards, showing the detail each side of, and behind the seat. non of my ref books have one.

Cheers

The only thing I can come up with is;
SAM Publications; The BAe (Hawker Siddeley) RAF Harrier; MDF 17. Page 71, three photos at bottom of page just about cover this area on a GR7

Kit ready, modeller mostly ready!, plan to do GR.3, the one on the box cover has red/yellow/black tail markings for IV Squadron so might do that one. Will have a look through my books in case a colour scheme jumps out on me.
Haven't told mum I'm making a kit this big yet.... :-D
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!
