Re: E.E. Lightning SB 'The Lightning Boys!'
It was now time to paint the model, I began by applying a thin wash of light grey to key the top coat of mixed pale silver grey, I then painted the canopy frames.
When that had dried I masked off the canopy and sprayed on the silver grey and set it to one side to fully cure.
I then returned to the brush to paint the darker panels, exhaust, nose ring, radome, anti glare panel and wing walkway lines with a little assistance from thin masking tape.

Re: E.E. Lightning SB 'The Lightning Boys!'
The stencils and other decals were applied to the airframe which was then matt varnished, when this had dried aftermarket roundels and fin flashes were applied, unfortunately I did not have the correct size of D type roundel for the wing upper surfaces and a new sheet will have to be ordered to finish the model. With the decalling work now done as far as I could I then completed assembly, the model now only needs the missing pair of roundels to be complete.
In the meantime I shall begin work on my NT Airfix F.2.

That's a superb looking model David,
I agree - That extension to the fin adds a good degree of interest.

Re: E.E. Lightning SB 'The Lightning Boys!'
The first section to build up was the cockpit, I had a spare Sword IP left over from my F.1 build so this was used instead of the kit panel and decal, the resin sword ejection seats are far better than the rather basic Airfix kit seat and show up the kit part somewhat so I have replaced it with an aftermarket Pavla mk4 seat.
I then built up the nose and tail trunking.

Now the pipework and cockpit were fitted into the fuselage, two steel nuts were cyanoe'd behind the intake trunking and were then bonded in place with a little car filler, when that had dried I glued the fuselage halves together.

The airframe was then assembled and the canopy was masked up.
Painting began by priming the airframe bar the fin in a black wash, the fin being primed in grey.

The Aqua 99 Alluminium base coat was airbrushed on followed by contrasting panels brushed on in various mixed shades of silver/alluminium , the spine and fin were then brush painted in Aqua 56 Blue.

Re: E.E. Lightning SB 'The Lightning Boys!'
I've started work on the Navy VG Lightning. The kit is the good old three coloured one, the wings would please yellow wing US Navy fans (Jratz??)....
I've put the seats on the detailed and extensive cockpit area... well a floor and two control sticks , one of which broke so only the left seat can fly the aircraft. Not much good for a trainer I know, but the canopy is thick enough to hide that!!.
I also have the Freightdog Models VG conversion set that I used on the single seat RAF version. It's designed for the Airfix NT Lightning so may need a little fettling to fit but hopefully it should go.

With the decals on and the airframe varnished the model is now almost done, I just have final assembly to complete to finish the model.
