David
That is indeed correct - the Kestrel was a very different animal from the prototype.

So the P.1127 and Kestral is an easier "spot the difference" to the GR.7 and GR.9?

Hi Mav,

Do you have any spaces on this or are you up to your allowed 6?

Regards

Stuart

We have some progress.

Not much but I needed to fix that short shot intake lip and make some trunking.

Well if there is space, I'm feeling drawn to my Airfix 1/24 Harrier GR.3! It's been sitting in the corner looking sullen for a good few years now, but I fancy building a project that's a bit bigger than the norm - This fits the bill.

Nothing Fancy, mainly OOB with some resin upgrades.

Cheers

You can call me David!

Well, not being a 'real' expert, here's my simplistic thoughts.

Wings - Planforms are very different. P1127 rear edges perpendicular to wing. Kestrel and Harrier - rear edges swept.
Fin - Kestrel and Harrier are a bit taller than P1127
Tailplanes - P1127 are narrower span than Kestrel and Harrier and most (NOT all) P1127s have horizontal tailplanes
Upper fuselage - Harrier and Kestrel have a bit of a hump between the wings.
Outriggers - P.1127 and Kestrel they are at the very tip of the wing. Harrier has extensions beyond the outriggers.
Intakes - a messy subject but P1127 has no auxiliary blow indoors and intakes are swept back. Also sometimes wore bloated metal or rubber intake lips.

That's all I can think of and I am ready to be corrected by somebody who really knows.

David

Sounds pretty good Stu!
It's funny as I was talking to my Mrs about that kit about 10 mins ago!

Ahh thats quite a list thanks David!

Ok so starting off heres a pic of the first 2 "Planned" kits for this SB:

I'm going to get started on the GR.7 first.
In the kit they provide you with 5 decal options and a bag full of Operation Telic weapons:

So I decided on the following loadout:

And in the last pic the wings are together, cockpit has been complete and weapons glued:

Thanks Mav - The fuselage is on the bench so I'll get some pictures taken after work.

Plenty of Harrier types seem to be forming up here and it looks like Stuart might even entertain us with his big one - ooh, matron, I can't wait to see that! :-D

Plodding away on the intakes. Pretty much done now. I added plastic card inside to reinforce the lips. Looks like the way the card extended too far forward would have been a good basis for making the inflated metal or rubber lips to the intakes that P1127s had during testing but I cut that excess off as I want the more normal intakes. I used CA to fill the short shot area on the intake lip.

Image

I also added plastic card to the inner sides of the intakes as the parts provided by Airfix leave a big vertical ledge that looks bad.

Image

Here's the next problem - the wings are way too thick and thicker than the roots on the fuselage.

Nice work David!

Looks a hell of a kit to try and build!

An early one (bagged kit moulded in silver) may be better. It's a pretty ancient mould.
