Airfix 1/72 DHC Chipmunk T.10 -- lancfan

Post by lancfan »

Here I am, ready to go with the kit and the neccessary colours ready and waiting for next Saturday, this kit will be part of a new personal build theme- preserved aircraft. I will begin with the BBMF and when that is complete I will choose subjects from other historic flights and museums. Although the model will not be greatly modified I will remove the rivets and open the canopy.

My last Chippie was the Canadian version, with a bubble canopy, so this will be an RAF version, with the more traditional canopy.
I'll be modelling mine in-flight, which will save me a load of cockpit detailing and will tone down the rivets, rather than smooth 'em off entirely.
If I remember, the decal sheet within the BBMF Millenium Collection was especially printed and shouldn't pose any problems for me. I take it you've got the new Chippy boxing and, if so, I believe Airfix have now fixed their past decal issues. You should be fine.

Bruce

Interesting theme, by the way.
Are you staying current, or will you be dipping into the past? I ask because the Vintage Pair were always a favourite of mine, back in the 70's.
...And I take it you have rigging thread for your Shuttleworth Collection?

Bruce

I will choose subjects such as the vintage pair as well as current aircraft but will definately NOT build things as early as those at Old Warden as this era has never held any interest for me but any rigged aircraft will be represented by rigged models.

And very useful they are too, cheers Greg. My chosen subject for the start next weekend will be WG468/G. The other aircraft has now been repainted in period silver/dayglo colours and the other kit in my stash will eventually appear in these new markings.

Bruce, the off-register decals with the Millenium collection were privately printed for the compiled set and were not official Airfix products, the decals in the new kit are new and are official Airfix decals made for them by Cartograf.
Here are both sheets with the new decals underneath the old ones.

Do you still get the Canadian canopy with the new release? Looking at the box, it doesn't appear so.

I've been refreshing my memory re detailing, by re-reading our old Chipmunk GB;

Black flying suits...cream gloves...or green flying suits! Very dark grey interior?
Instrument panels?

Sand off rivets.
Cut off nose, to re-create thinner trailing edge to cowling.
Drill out front of engine and insert rod.
Animate control surfaces.
Brake lines to wheels.

Well here I go, the first step on my first Chipmunk for some time. I have decided that this model will have as much cockpit detail as I can comfortably fit inside it so the short stumps that the kit seats fit onto have been milled away and a more realistic shape has been sanded into the bottom of the cockpit area. The flaps have been removed and the upper halves are glued in place, the fuselage halves are only taped together at this stage so that I can make a full-size Miliput plug of the free space inside the fuselage.
