Splash,

Good luck with adding the wings and doing the canopy framing. Re the latter, I've still got that hurdle to climb, too. After a couple of hours of playing around, here's where I am.

Canopy on, any gaps PVA'd and painted around the edges:

Wheel doors added. These were from the Airwaves etched brass set. The door fronts had to be 'bent' and then thin plastic sheet was superglued onto the back to get a reasonable thickness. Once dry, it was cut back to size; the doors were then painted and attached. The cluttered surface appearance of the Barracuda is beginning to appear:

And a view of the undersides. The bottom facing flats on the undercarriage should, presumably be the appropriate uppersurface colour instead of sky. I'll repaint those idc. Irritatingly, I've lost one of the tailplane struts, so I'll have to scratchbuild those.

Thanks, David.

We're getting there! Canopy framing done. Narrow brush, freehand, cocktail stick for removing wibblies:

I have also added a hook (that you can't see in the photo). It probably sits a bit proud of where it should, but hey ho.

Well done with the canopy Martin.

I hope mine comes out half as good, then I will be happy.

Thanks, Splash.

Some spare Airfix Mossie undercarriage support struts became Barra tailplane struts. While I was adding those, I noticed that the tailplane was not square when viewed from the front. While attempting to 'adjust' the angle, the fin snapped off! D'oh!!!!!

To spare the paintwork, I filled the joint with white glue, left it to go tacky and wiped the excess off with damp cotton buds. After time to dry and a couple of coats of camouflage paint on the joint, the situation appears to have been resolved satisfactorily. Whew!

The landing light has gone in to the leading edge after some sanding to make it fit approximately, gaps have been PVA'd and, once dry, touched up. Finally, I have given the airframe a couple of brush coats of klear (especially over the decals) in preparation for an oil wash tomorrow. Hopefully after that, I'll have something worth a pic.

A demain!

regards,

Martin

A good day at the bench has nearly completed mine, all it needs is the prop fitting and the radar sorting out.

I'm not sure who gave me the tip for doing landing lights, I think it might have been Jeff but it worked, you cut a small shape of cling film and stick it down with klear .

Nicely done, Splash!

Where did you get the 'fish from? I'm assuming that's not the one from the kit, 'fettled'. If it is, fab job!

The bomb carriers and fish are off the Airfix new Swordfish that I had spare.

Apart from the radar I'm calling this one finished.

A big thank you to Martin and David, for your support and help during this build, my original intention was to just build it straight out of the box, but you both showed me that kit errors are to big to leave alone.

I really enjoyed this shared build, for its age the good old Frog Barracuda does scrub up well with a bit of extra work and a good spares box

Very nice, sir! It's been a pleasure to build with you and David.

Martin

PS Now I have to finish mine!

PPS When I finish, I was thinking of starting a thread in aviation modelling to show off the finished articles and hopefully act as an advertisement for SB. Do you agree and, if so, will you post a few shots of your finished Barras on it?

Hi again!

The difference between the photos below and the previous ones I posted is that the aircraft has now had an 'oil wash'. Blobs of oil paint were applies randomly to the airframe in sections; tan and light grey on top and dark brown and dark grey on the underside. A wide flat brush was then moistened in enamel thinners and then brushed over the blobs, 'feathering' the paints out in a streamwise direction. The aim was to create a toned down, uneven, used effect. It's supposed to be subtle but make a difference, and it has turned out that way to my eyes at least. See whether you can see the difference with the finish in the previous posts:

To do:

Paint and dirty up the exhausts,
Add ice guards to the cheek intakes,
Add Pitot,
Add torpedo crutches,
Spread some Tamiya smoke round the gear and wells,
'Scratch' an oil cooler outlet door,
Add overall coat of matt varnish.

Apart from that, it's finished :)

regards,

Martin
