Unfortunately, I've been Barracuda-ing tonight, so nothing done to the Tempest. I'll get back to that tomorrow night, hopefully.

First, the kit.........which, by the way, has more flash than a camera....

Image

I started to trim and dry fit the fuselage and wings. No matter what I do, there will be gaps. A big gap on the wing to fuselage for such a small scale.

Image

The lower portion is even worse. Big gaps on both forward and aft sides.

Image

Guess that's what filler is for. I think I may try blocking off the wheel wells and filling them in for an in flight stance, as long as I'm going to need filler anyways. That's all I'm able to do today. I'll have more time tomorrow to work on this.

Now that is a pretty poor fit. At least in 1/144 scale, you won't need that much filler!
Good luck with this one. :)

Cheers

Andrew

Last nights progress. Got the sub- assemblies made. The fuselage joined up better than I thought. There is almost no gap at the wing roots now. I blocked off and filled in the wheel wells. I think this one is better with wheels up. The engine nacelles are going to need some sanding and filling before I attach them to the wings.

Mine will both be wheels-up too, seeing as you get a nice stand with the kits.

Does anyone know just how old these molds are?

I notice that the Tempest has a smaller cockpit hole than the Typhoon- I had to build up the decking behind the armoured headrest on the Typhoon before adding a scrathbuilt cockpit; smallest seat belts I have ever made
currently on the go: Revell Blenheim I, Italeri Me210, Revell HMS victory, Revell 1/144 p-47

That's why I'm cheating and just painting my canopies gloss black!

Well, I couldn't be bothered with seatbelts, but here is where I got to with the cockpit before losing patience:

Featureless IP:

And after some judicious thinning, sanding and shimming, here she is together. The fit looks OK from the top:

But not from the bottom. Some filler in my immediate future, methinks:

No way I could even think of doing a scratch built cockpit in this scale!!! Great work!!!

That is a nice little tub, Martin. I wouldn't even consider doing that. Life's too short!

I've made a little progress. I've added the wings to the Typhoon and applied liberal amounts of filler to hide the gaping chasms where the wings should meet the fuselage.
Image
Look at all that glue mess on the canopy!!!

On the underside I've also had to use the filler so that I get a seamless transition to the wing - there's about 0.5mm step. Not a massive amount in any other scale than this.
Image

I foresee mucho sanding in the near future....

I've also made a little start on the Spitfire. As it's going to be wheels up I trimmed the legs to fit the aperture and have glued the wheels in place. Easier to do it before the wings are assembled. There a sink mark right in the middle of the wheel covers, so I filled those. Still needs finishing off.
Image
I should have done this with the Typhoon too. But I forgot.

Looking good, Ian!

Here's the Tempest after a couple of fill-sand cycles and an attempt to represent the radiator matrix with fine wire mesh and some plastic tubing:

I hope to get some primer on tomorrow.
