Short history of the Frog Heinkel He 111

The kit was originally issued by Frog in 1972 then re-boxed by Revell in 1984, Revell then re-issued it with a change of decals in 1994 and finally issued it as part of the "Battle of Britain" box set with a Spitfire, Hurricane & Junkers JU-87.

The old frog kit has now been superseded by Revell re-boxed Hasegawa He111.

Do Revell clean up the moulds when they re-Issue other manufactures kits?

I only ask, because looking at this kit the parts are clear of flash and quite sharply moulded with fine raised lines, when I found out it was the old frog kit, I was expecting flash and soft detail.

This is only my first impressions on opening the box and things might change when I start building tonight. Having visited other kit review sites the old Frog kit gets not bad reviews, I found one site that did a three kit comparison between the Airfix/Frog/Matchbox kits and the frog kit did well leaving the Airfix kit trailing in its dust.

I see Airfix have re-issued their old kit in a spanking new box and are asking £16.99 for it, that can’t be good business sense, I know I would be slightly miffed if I spent £16.99 and found out it was such an old kit.

Here is my box and sprue shot, I don't know if Revell service their old tool releases but all the kits in this set do seem in very good order. It is amazing to think that this Heinkel is over 40 years old as the parts look as if they are from an almost new tool and the fighters are almost a decade older than that.

I have started by removing the fuselage sides and the cockpit parts from the sprues, I intend to improve this area before joining the halves together based on pictures and drawings found online and on my bookshelves. I plan to open the top hatch and raise the pilots seat as this feature has always interested me and I have considered including this feature ever since buying this kit.

As I'm totally out of my depth with this subject, I'm going to follow your lead David.

Tonight I spent time sat in front of the TV cutting the parts out and was impressed by the quality of the parts and agree with you the kit feels a lot newer than it is.

Progress will be slow until Monday as I'm away, this is really just a cunning plan to see what I'm supposed to do with the cockpit :-D

Nice work on the Cockpit David.

I have started by assembling the wings and tail planes . I can see why you have done all the work on the cockpit as the kits parts are basic. But how much will be seen through the thick canopy?

More than usual Splash because I will open up the sliding hatch over the pilot's seat and the side hatch opposite.

To ensure that the cockpit will be lined up properly I have glued the cockpit to one side only and dry fitted the halves together before finally joining the fuselage up later today.

Less time at the bench than I intended last night, due to all the good 50 years of Doctor Who programmes on TV.

I did find time to stick the canopy parts together and was surprised how well the three parts fitted and how clear the parts are, so I might have to add some detail to the cockpit after all.
