The LM looks great, Jim. I know what you mean about the base. You could always give it a covering with Polyfilla (or the Aus equivalent). Once it's dried, a coat of PVA and add some fine sand. Spray black then drydrush greys and white.
I'm a mostly full-time modeller put a part-time poster....

Ian, I like your idea, your base looks fantastic. I've sprayed the base with a dark grey and thought I might do some dry brushing and see how it looks to start with. With it all dark grey it doesn't look as horrific as I thought...
