lancfan's Airfix Eagle LM ***FINISHED***

Post by lancfan »

I am building the 1/72 scale Airfix model is from the 'One Small Step' set and it will be built with the original circular base, it will be slightly improved following modifications in the build article from the November 1972 issue of Almark Modelworld.

Any chance you can scan or photograph the article and post here, David? Copyright permitting, of course.
It could be useful for us all.
I'm a mostly full-time modeller put a part-time poster....

Here is the box and sprue shot, this will be a blast from the past for me especially as this kit is in the same white plastic as the series three original. I will not use the diorama base supplied with the 'One small step' kit, instead I will simply use the moonscape disc from the original sprues.

More shiny foil. My brother built this many many many years ago. It looked good then. I hope the molds have held up OK.

I have worked up to date on GBs and can turn my full attention to this build.
I will have a good tidy up tomorrow after which I will begin. My model will be detailed using an article published in the November 1972 (Vol.1 no. 3) issue of Almark Modelworld, an absolutely brilliant modelling magazine that sadly did not survive the world paper shortage of the day and only ran to 18 issues before it was cancelled.

I have a couple of those mags somewhere - a larger format than the old Airfix mag of the day, but in a similar vein.

Nice to see Airfix using chocolate wrappers - I had to provide my own when I built this in the seventies!

The two halves of the descent stage have been glued together and set aside to dry, the windows have been glued into the front half of the ascent stage and the interior has been painted dark grey, when the paint is dry the two halves will be glued together and placed with the descent stage hull to dry, when these have dried both will need modification following the magazine plans.

You're making me think I should have painted my interior before closing up.....

Both hulls are assembled and they now both need modifying- I will start with the descent stage on the left.

Two views of the descent stage with the plastic card additions shown in blue, the next step will be to cover the whole unit in gold foil.
