Re: lancfan's Airfix Eagle LM- Descent Stage done!
Excellent work David - after all this effort the model should look a lot more like the real thing!
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Re: lancfan's Airfix Eagle LM- Descent Stage done!
Three views of the basic ascent module, it still needs antenaes and thrusters but it is now ready for initial paintwork.
The base has been joined together and all of the footprints have been filled, when the model is finished it will be posed as if it has just landed and the crew are preparing for that 'small step'

Now basically complete, the ascent stage only needs final painting and touching in to be ready for assembly. Have decided to discard the kit base as it looks more like a battlefield than an airless moon. The model will be completed on wednesday when I obtain a pot of decent gold paint to re-coat the legs and other small parts.

That looks awesome. Very nice work David. I'll be using this thread and others for reference when I build my Airfix and Revell ones.
All the best.

Cheers Greg, this is how it looks now, there are a number of small bits and bobs to fit but it will be finished on Wednesday when I get hold of a pot of decent gold paint.

Very cool, there's just something about the lunar module.

The curved section of black insulation makes it look more like the Apollo 9 LM.

Eric, The images and information I am using conflict on these machines and the attribution for images of various LMs is doubtful, added to the poor lighting on many of these pictures this is the best I can get with the information I can find so- if you know different may I suggest that you share rather than simply criticise.Eric Mc wrote:The curved section of black insulation makes it look more like the Apollo 9 LM.

Re: lancfan's Airfix Eagle LM- Descent Stage done!
I certainly didn't intend to criticise. I was making an observation. I think the model looks great - but that particular pattern of black shielding was used, as far as I can tell, only on the Apollo 9 LM. I presume this is because the heating conditions in earth orbit were a bit different to what would be experienced in Lunar orbit and on the surface of the moon.
The patterns did vary from LM to LM,
I'd love to be able to post the pattern scheme diagrams for the Apollo 11 LM that were shown in the 1979 edition of "Scale Models" but as has been pointed out elsewhere there could be copyright issues in doing that and also my scanner is knackered.

Eric, sorry for the misunderstanding, yes they were all different and some of the online images are wrongly captioned and clearly show different LMs, the kit instruction are also not what they could be, can you describe the changes I need to make to the panels? it is still not to late to correct this.

OK - I'll take a chance. After all, the artwork is 34 years old.
This is what was shown for the black/gold areas of the Apollo 11 descent stage.
I used my camera as the scanner is u/s.

Re: lancfan's Airfix Eagle LM- Descent Stage done!
I have corrected my descent stage to match the drawing, I have re foiled the upper part of quadrant 4 and repainted where needed, when the paint is dry I will post pictures of the model which should do as a record and you can remove your shot.
I have gone through the pictures and plans I have and have altered the ascent stage, when I post the picture can you tell me if it is nearer?
David.

Re: lancfan's Airfix Eagle LM- Descent Stage done!
Blimey - that was quick.
That article has been my LM bible for three decades now.
Despite all the tens of thousands of photographs taken during the entire Apollo programme, getting good, clear pictures of specific items of machinery is actually quite difficult. I had real problems trying to locate decent and extensive pictures which showed all aspects of the Block I Command/Service Modules - which differed substantially from the Block IIs that were actually used on all the manned flights.
I guess that the NASA engineers weren't particularly thinking of future generations of modellers when they were carrying out their work.

Re: lancfan's Airfix Eagle LM- Descent Stage done!
The corrections are simple localised repaints so it did not take too long, when it is dry I will photograph all four sides and the ascent stage for you to check, if that is correct you can delete the image and all is well.
