mmD's Apollo 8 LCM

Post by mightymikeD »

While I wait to lay my mitts on the gear to build an awfu' big rocket I thought I'd better get involved here..

Image

The good old Lunar Command Module that ferried Messrs Armstrong, Collins and Aldrin to and from.

The kit comes in at a whopping 14 pieces of nicely moulded, flash-free plastic. Why the heck didn't I think of this during the Bllitzbau instead of mucking around with ships?

A couple of hours (no, really) gets me here..

Fun times!

That's the Command/Service Module I built a few months ago - you can see the picture in the previous builds forum.

It is pretty inaccurate as a depiction of an actual Apollo spacecraft. It is closest in shape to the original Block 1 design and even with that it is still fairly poor, especially in respect of the base of the Service Module and the Service Propulsion System engine bell.. None of the Block 1s were used on any manned Apollo missions.

If you notice, there are two "C" shaped antennae on the Command Module. That was typical of the original Block 1 design. On the Block 2, those antennae were moved to the Service Module.

Not done yet Mike? or have you become bogged down in a bit of JMN style conversion work to make this accurate - it's amazing what can be done with a few off cuts of placcy card and a bit of wire
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Work is the curse of the modelling classes!

The other major problem with the Heller CSM is the shape and location of the corrugations (radiator panels) on the SM. They are definitely more akin to those of the Block 1 SM (although even then they are not truly accurate).

It can safely be said that virtually none of the models produced by the kit manufacturers during the actual Apollo era properly represent genuine Apollo spacecraft.

This one is built and done.. it's just not decalled (yet) because, while having a tidy-up the other day, I saw the teeny decal sheet and thought "Ah, I'll put this ******** for safekeeping". I remember thinking that, I remember doing it. Do I remember where? No. But they'll pop up..

I'm sure you could hand-paint them, Mike?
