My first car (and still my favourite) was a Mazda 1300 wagon, identical to this one:

I have since owned another 4 of these as well as a Mazda 808, RX2, RX7 and various other 1970s Jap pocket cars. I'm trying to model all of them. There is an old kit of the Mazda R100 (rotary coupe version of the 1300) but it costs a mint if you can even find one. I have decided to scratchbuild one in 1/24 using balsa to make a resin casting master mould. As practice, I am scratchbuilding one in matchbox car scale as practice. If all goes well, I plan to attempt a Mazda 1500SS and a KE35 Corolla.
I used plans pinned to a balsa block to get the basic shape:
From there, more carving produced a reasonable approximation:
More shaping, filling and adding stretched sprue to get the lower body line has produced this now:
Still need to refine and smooth the shape and add roof guttering and lights, grille, door handles and other detail.
Balsa carving is a lot more straightforward than I expected

Re: Mazda 1300 scratch-build
Nice work. Carve me up a HB Torana, that was my first real car, previous to that was a Honda Scamp, just a car body built round a motorbike engine really I wouldn't mind if I still had them both though

This is looking to be a very interesting tread! Must be very fun building your first car.
If I there only was a kit of a 64 model Saab 96 2 stroke… I don`t think I could manage what you are doing!

Re: Mazda 1300 scratch-build
Cheers, gents. It's a bit held up waiting for me to build lights and a grille. That will be some pretty intricate scratchbuilding. Now that the Airliners GB is finished I can get back to it though.
The HB Torana is a worthy beast, Nigel. I don't like your chances of finding a model of that...
Ivan, the lines on that Saab would make for a very challenging scratchbuild!
1970s cars are at least partially boxy.
