Mercedes 300SL

Post by syd-baines »

after looking at my stash of kits for a while i decided to build the Mercedes 300SL, the parts are spread over 5 sprues, the chrome parts are beautiful in this kit they are the best i have seen, i usually dechrome them then use alclad but i dont think i will have to with these as they look just right, looking at them Tamiya also thought of the attachment points as they seem to be where they will not show, i have also bought a photo etch set for this kit which gives me another 4 sprues, i have decided to do the body work in silver with a red interior which in my opinion is the only colour for it although customers could choose any colour combination they wanted

It's a beautiful car and looks like a great kit. This will be fun to watch.

started the merc. done the frame work chassis, despite its complexity it went together rather well, Tamiya has done a good job with this kit and made the complex shapes easy to put together, hope the rest of the parts go together just as easy

My goodness, did that MB have a complete tubular frame? I didn't know that.

hi David it did have a tubular frame and by the look of the cross braces it was quite strong, but like i said Tamiya has made it easy to put together, anyway on with the build i got carried away with building i forgot to take photos until i got the engine in the frame, this is going together well i have not come across any problems with it so far, the parts require very little clean up, in fact just a light sanding to give the paint something to hang on to and that`s all, the fit is excellent, so far it is the easiest kit i have built , but it has opening doors and bonnet so will see what they are like when i get to them which sometimes you need two pairs of hands for

i have got the fire wall done, i have put some flocking to replicate carpet, i don`t know if the car had carpet originally but i think it looks better than just painted

Coming along nicely. My 2 cents, I'd go hub caps.

Looking good.

That's a tough choice between the hubcaps or knock off's, you could always use both as you can only see one side at a time :-D

I would flip a coin if it was me

Have you seen this? http://www.autoblog.com/2013/03/29/merc ... -mechanic/ it looks like the tubular frame works well if you roll a 300SL :-D
