Although I love my classic racing cars, it's ages since I built a model of one.

I started this one because my model club was holding a competition entitled "Civilian Vehicles".

It's fairly basic - as you might expect from a set of moulds that date back to 1967. I presume it was also available in Airfix's Slot Car series - which was their rival format to Scalextric.

I was waiting for the pictures of the finished model taken at my local club night to appear on the club website. However, as they haven't appeared yet, I've taken my own. Here's the finished model. The main area I'm disappointed with is that the roundels were on the thin side.

I replaced the kit wheels with better items designed for slot cars.

I bought them from Pendle Slot Cars. I had to modify the Airfix hubs and brakes to make them fit.

Pendle also supply large diameter wire wheels for older sports cars.

I've only ever read poor reviews of Airfix 1/32 motor cars so I was rather pleasantly surprised at how easy it was as a kit. Yes, it did have some issues but only of a type you might associate with a model that dates from half a century ago. The one feature that I felt had to be replaced were the wire wheels. Other than that, the kit was built straight from the box. I chose the Maranello Concessionaires colours because they are bit different to the standard all red schemes you usually see on Ferraris.

The experience was good and I certainly will now tackle some of the other 1/32 Airfix car kits I have in my stash.

That is a lovely little model, turned out well, some of these old airfix kits are little gems.
