Airfix 1/32 Gulf Porsche 917 - SMW 2017 ***finished***

Not a bad little kit, though the way the rear wheels tuck under the shell is wrong, and I can't figure out how to fix it without major surgery.

...and I couldn't resist getting arty:

Decals from Patto's Place, in a spurious scheme because the orange nose decals just do not fit this kit at all.

Another, rather different, 917 coming soon...

Very nice indeed, Matt. That Gulf livery is just so iconic. After a quick scan of pics on t'web I see what you mean regarding the rear wheels. To me it looks like they need spacers to push them further out and then to avoid fouling the body work either the ride height needs upping a smidge or a little of the rear wheel arches needs removing, whilst still maintaining the profile, or a bit of both! Not an easy task I would imagine.

Thanks, Shaun... you're not kidding about the "no easy task". The wheels are positioned by the engine and suspension frame that fits onto the one piece floorpan. This floorpan includes the lower surface of the "tail" right up to the rear, where the separate vertical panel fits between the bodyshell and floorpan. To move the wheels outboard, you'd need to reprofile the curve at the rear of the bodyshell, lift the undertail segment of the floor to match, and reduce the height of the vertical tail end panel. Thing is, the tail panel proportions and the curves of the rear end of the body look OK to me. Of course on the real thing the wall thickness of the bodyshell is much less, but my take on the reference pictures I have is that the rear wheels are completely below the tail, not tucked inside the body at all. I can't see what's wrong -- my best guess is that the tail should kick higher earlier after the doors and give more height for the leading edge of the cut-out. It's annoying, because it's the only obvious thing wrong with what's otherwise quite a nice little replica...

best,
M.

Very tasty!

The Gulf scheme also looks good on an Me 110 (Fantasy F1 artwork; one day I'll get around to building one!)
Best wishes

Great effort Matt. Love the Gulf scheme.

Fro a good side view check out the 3rd image on this page : http://autoweek.com/article/car-life/yo ... rsche-917k;

I think it you just square up the under curve of the rear body it would largely achieve what is required.
