Engines both really innapropriate. RML were all fitted with AEC engines. Although interchangable I think only one RML ever had a Leyland unit in service. (not one of these fleetnumbers!)

My info says Both fleet numbers depicted in the decals were re-engined with Cummins engines not Scania. but one may have been fitted with a scania in preservation?

Front wings are late standard RM Wings, not the revised profile RML type. (not level with Radiator bottom profile) These are Ok for a post privatisation colour scheme, as they were fitted to some RML, (check references on this) but then the front reg plate is now in the wrong place for those wings! (see boxtop)

Both buses I think are depicted in post Preservation schemes, not service schemes. Poor research by Revell.
Overall though an OK kit.

As long as you keep the bonnet closed, and with a little bit of work on the front end can be made into a good model.

Out with the Glue and paints!

I think they use the word Leyland in thier options as A E C became Leyland owned in the early 60s, the actual engine kitted is the AEC lump from pictures i have seen of it

as for the scania engine i have spare i may pop that in my citroen 2cv kit if i can build a suitable axle.

Amazing, with 10 minutes of a bus enthusiasts time and Revell could have got it spot on

you could count on one hand the amount of kits in the world that are spot on, the engine in this kit is correct and of excellent detail, it is the AEC unit but for some reason Revell call it Leyland in thier instructions, which i suppose technically is sort of correct as Leyland owned AEC.
as for the front wings they look pretty good to me but to a specialist on the subject then fair comment, but i think for the skill levell required for this kit it will be a doddle to correct.

For £35.00 i think revell are on to a winner its a great kit, if Airfix were in any way brave enough to have attempted this it would have been nearer the £60 mark all day long and certainly no more detailed.

still come February check the shelves at TK Maxx

I have double checked the engine is definately a AEC lump not leyland. The wings are not technically wrong, they changed many times over the lifetime of the RML, itis just inportant to do your research before you start coutting plastic!

Wouldn't it be easier just to change the numbers? Then you could have the "proper" engine. There can't be too many people who can tell at a glance whether a particular individual bus ran on a particular route...

So how difficult will it be to convert this back to a proper sized Routemaster, without the extra window in the middle?

all they did to extend the routemaster was cut it down the middle put the piece in and put it back together (not literally of course) so basically a reversal on the model would suffice way out of my patience level but in sure to a expert quite easy.

Anyone notice that the rear wheel assembly is inncorrect on the instructions?
im sure it tells you to fit the outerwheel the wrong way round (leaving the back of the wheel exposed)?
even further on in the instuctions they can be seen the wrong way round also.

quite a clanger really.

The Rear Hubs should really have wheel disks on them to obscure the hub detail, it was only later on in life that they were lost or left off.

Well I'm not a bus enthusiast but I do love the Routemaster so I'll enjoy building mine. I have to say that I'm very pleased with the kit and the level of detail...I was a little worried over the finesse of some of the smaller pieces as Revell can be a little hit and miss on some of their larger vehicles, but I can't find anything that looks poorly moulded or overscale.
My only real disappointment is in the options given on the decal sheet...the combination of the British Museum on one side and Jacob's Crackers on the other looks a little contrived and the ads appear to be from two different time periods.
Given the wealth of different adverts carried over the years I'm sure Revell could have done better...I'm guessing that the scheme supplied is based on a restored vehicle or was possibly done for reasons of copyright.
I'm sure that someone will be releasing aftermarket decals in the coming months. In fact I've emailed Fox Transfers, who carry an excellent range of 1/76 bus schemes, to encourage them to release some larger sets.

I use the car colours from Halfords...bigger range and bigger cans, their grey primer is the best I've tried of any manufacturer.
They do a BMW Bright Red which looks good to my eye.

Has anyone got any pictures of the scania engine used in this bus? As I am building the later version from the 1990's. I can't find anything online. :???:
