Tamiya 1/24 Mini Cooper
Talk about slow builds, I started this build in 1991.
This is as far as I got, so its time to finish it.
I have now added all the running gear and weathered the engine bay and underside. I changed the spark plug leads but I’m not happy with them as I think they look to big.
I only have to add small detailing parts to finish it now.
Regards

Wow, I thought I was bad with my Lotus 7 been sitting for a few months unfinished
The weathering in the engine bay looks good but those HT leads are way too thick certainly.

Looking good and great detailing in the engine department, but yes, as you say, the HT leads are too big.

Nice Mini. It is looking good.
Maybe I can beat you with the starting time. I have the 1/24 Tamiya Mini Monte Carlo and this project stalled a long time ago.

I agree the HT leads are to big and must be changed again.montessa315 wrote:Looking good and great detailing in the engine department, but yes, as you say, the HT leads are too big.

Re: Tamiya 1/24 Mini Cooper
To give you an idea on the leads, here is a Tamiya 1;24 Replica of my old mini.It started off as a 1982 mini 1000HL,then I chopped the front off and replaced it with a flip front, added Cooper 7.5'' discs, negative camber arms, cut the trumpets down.Added solid subframe mounts and fitted 6'' wheels with 165x70x10 tyres. All this with a road burning standard 998 lump...
Then I dropped in a 1425cc engine with the usual tweaks.. Boy did it shift then!! Back in the day I was able to blow away Escort R.S. Turbo's!

That does look nice, I had a Mini Mayfair 998 that I fitted a Mild Kent road cam, RC40 exhaust and other tweaks, it was one of the most enjoyable cars I ever owned, not as quick as yours but it always punched above its weightarni wrote:To give you an idea on the leads, here is a Tamiya 1;24 Replica of my old mini.It started off as a 1982 mini 1000HL,then I chopped the front off and replaced it with a flip front, added Cooper 7.5'' discs, negative camber arms, cut the trumpets down.Added solid subframe mounts and fitted 6'' wheels with 165x70x10 tyres. All this with a road burning standard 998 lump...

Re: Tamiya 1/24 Mini Cooper
Any mini is fun to drive,on mine the cam came on 'tune' at around 2200 rpm and still delivered power at 7500 rpm! and that engine speed in a mini in second gear is just nuts to drive..
I built up a 998 engine for a friend,it had a second hand pocketed block and I modified a M.G. Metro 1275 head for it (big ports and a bit of chamber work ect) it was dyno tested and produced 65 bhp at the crank, not too bad for a 998 lump.LOL

I have now changed the HT leads for a smaller size wire.
I think that looks better.

Re: Tamiya 1/24 Mini Cooper
Great builds guys. I love the look of the old Mini (the supposed new one ISN'T a Mini as far as I'm concerned) though i HATED the 850cc one I owned. It handled well enough and drove like a cart but it was one of those cars that just hated finishing a journey where I wanted it to end and not a maximum of half way there like the car wanted. I once left the keys in it hopeing someone would steal it (I wouldn't have claimed the insurance btw) and no one was stupid enough to take it. Still, I sold it for a profit to someone I didn't like so thats a bonus.
