A pink Spitfire, unusual. Looking forward to seeing it with some paint on. What colour did you decide on in the end?

Re: OT's Rhodesian F.22
It's not pink, honest. Just bad lighting.
I am trying out a new primer from the pound shop - not sure it is the best idea I have had.

Still not decided, either my own mix of light blue or, as the Mark1 instructions call for: Gloss light Grey. It might all come down to the time I have left.Molly-new wrote: What colour did you decide on in the end?

Been there and done that. I try to live by the saying that "you get what you pay for", and so should know better, but I still end up buying cheap stuff that does not perform properly.Old_Tonto wrote:I am trying out a new primer from the pound shop - not sure it is the best idea I have had.

There's nothing wrong with Pink Spitfires - Low Level photo Recon - Those were real men, flying low over the enemy in a Pink Airplane.Old_Tonto wrote:It's not pink, honest. Just bad lighting.

Re: OT's Rhodesian F.22
With my other two builds out of the way I can concentrate on this build now.
I could not progress any furthur until I decided to settle on a colour. All the decal manufacturers that make Southern Rhodesian markings for the Spitfire F22 state that the colour is light grey. The only 'eye witness' statements say they were light blue but furthur reading reveals these to be second hand information or faded memories. Maybe the strong african sun changed the colour over time? I had intended to go with RAF Medium Sea Grey but it looks too dark when compared to this picture:
I am assuming this chap is wearing a white flight suit. If I am correct the Spitfire is indeed a light grey or very light blue colour. So I opted for Xtracrylix XA1140, Light Grey FS16622.
My next momentus decision was to use my airbrush for the first time. I had nothing to lose as I have already completed 2 Spits for this group build.
This is how it turned out:
I think it looks ok for a first attempt. I have no idea if I had the correct PSI set & I may have thinned the paint down too much because it took four coats to cover it. I am very impressed at how quickly the paint dries.
Anyway, next up:

Re: OT's Rhodesian F.22
Arrrrrrrrgh
It's my own fault, I know. I was giving people my hard earned advice on canopy masking yesterday & when I unmasked the Spit canopy last night I have somehow managed to get a piece of Tamiya tape on the inside of the canopy:
David Blaine would be proud of that trick!
Looks like I am going with an open canopy after all. Wish I had done more with the interior now. What a muppet.

Re: OT's Rhodesian F.22
Oh dear, great trick OT. What's the secret?
Can't you carefully lift/prick it open, remove the tape and glue it back on, then touch up with paint?

Confused as always, and somewhere in hiding on the Scandinavian peninsula...

Think it might be the first time I've ever seen that The grey mix you've used looks spot on though OT, good call.

that is exactly what I did.Prisca wrote:Oh dear, great trick OT. What's the secret?

I managed to remove the bubble canopy & clean it up. I decided to reposition it open as the fit was better that way.
Thanks Tom. It reminds me of the early recce Spitfires. I'm still not convinced its the correct colour but as my first spray job I am satisfied.TomW wrote:The grey mix you've used looks spot on though OT, good call.
Tom
Decals went on tonight so we are getting there.

I am calling this one done. It was looking too clean so I applied a wash.
Looks better now - apologies for the poor pictures.
I will upload some better pictures tomorrow.
