Tom's Seafire Mk.46 **Finished**

Post by TomW »

This will be my second build for this GB and is the recent kit by Legato; a subsidiary of AZ Models.

Nice Box-art:

And marking options, both from 1832 RNAS at Culham:

Sprue shots and major airframe componentry:

Appears to be a normal short run kit so it might throw a few curveballs at me during construction but it'll make a different addition to the cabinet

Fair to say that the cockpit parts dont all want to line up with each other very much, so I've resorted to fitting individual parts inside the fuselage halves to let them dry. I'd normally follow the recommended construction steps but find that short-run kits tend to need a more ad-hoc approach ;-)

Hers's a picture of the halves and lower wing test-fitted in place, the fit is pretty good:

I might get lucky and not have to spend days filling and sanding, fingers crossed

I really need to get a Seafire kit someday. This will be a beauty.

Looking forward to seeing this done, I was thinking about trying one of those Legato kits.

These AZ / Legato kits aren't too bad but I would recommend acquiring the AZ boxing of a kit instead of a Legato one. Legato is where AZ moulds go when they're getting tired and it does show on each part.

Anyways, here are some progress shots of the Seafire looking like a partly unwrapped mummy:

Check out my wing root gaps:

Everything is lined up properly but each upper wing is a mm or so too short  , much filler will be required as well as flexing of the sanding muscles.

WAAAAIIIITTT!!!!!

Before you start filling, try inserting a spreader bar inside the fuselage between the wing roots. Or try two.
Measure out some sprue to the proper width and stick it in there. It may not get the gap entirely, but should make it more managable with putty.

Oh and thanks for the tip on AZ kits.

I like the spreader bar idea- I might try that on my XIX...

That is a tip I'll keep in mind when I next tackle an AZ Spitfire Ralph, Unfortunately this muppet had already glued the offending parts together when he posted that shot  Luckily it didn't take as much effort (or filler) to sort out as I feared:

First coat of EDSG on and as you can see Im going for the all-over Grey aircraft as I think it suits the brutish lines of the mk.46 better than the TSS scheme, personal preference of course ;-)

Looking good there Tom.

It does look very ' Business like' in the EDSG. Very menacing.

Apologies for the lack of progress on this one  unfortunately rather pressing family and work issues have swallowed my time in the last 10 days, however I have got some free time now so updates and pictures will appear soon!
