Jeff's bashes a Mk XVIII***finished***
Jeff's bashes a Mk XVIII***finished***
Here is my project for the build.
My aim is to bash a MkXIVe into a Mk XVIII. I think I can do this. The main issue I envision is to make the high back into a low back. Using some inspiration from the Alan Hall days, it should be easy to do.
The finished product will be from 60 Sqdn RAF.
First: The donor kit.
Here are the innards.
So my start is just around the corner. I need to tidy up a few details of the Blitzbau.

Re: Jeff's bashes a Mk XVIII
This should be interesting to watch. Go Jeff.
Don't forget that you need to convert the wing to an 'E' config.
If it is any use to you I might have a lower spine from the old Matchbox MkIX\XVI if you want it.

Check your references - later XVIIIs had a broader, taller rudder.

Well into the planning stage now.
Fuselage decking is cut down for the low back.
Now I have everything taped together to see how it looks. I have made the plug out of plastic stock.
Doesn't look much right now but after the dust settles it should be all right. A new headrest is in my future also.
Time for some good old school "Alan Hall" work now.

Before I forget........Yes, Paul and cheers for the rudder information. It's in the works.
Found this on another site by John (Mr Aeroclub). There is lots of discussion on this but it is good enough for me. But apparently there is enough wrong with the Academy kit the rudder is the least of my worries. Looks like an easy scratch build to me.
I did pick up on the twin Trim Tab however that I would have missed.

Re: Jeff's bashes a Mk XVIII
Last night I had a very pleasant evening working up the replacement rudder for the Mk XVIII.
It started with removing the kit part and tracing it onto paper. The new outline, based on the above photo, was drawn on and the new template was cut out. Placing the template onto left over sheet stock, three copies were drawn out. These new pieces were cut out and glued together. This created the thickness at the widest point. After the glue set up filing with a fingernail file emory board commenced. I don't waste time grinding off plastic. Slowly the taper was put in. After many test fits it started to show progress. In the future the center piece of stock will be a different color. This will provide a guide, better than my Mk1 eyeball, as to how far to grind down. But so far so good. I left the piece with a coat of Tamiya Surface Primer to set up overnight. The final sanding and shaping will be done tonight.
And before the evening was finished, work was done on the airscrew and aligning the blades.
And so we move forward.
I have also read a comment by Mr Brooks that the bubble top Spits had a black and green cockpit. Black down to the entry hatch hinge to cut down glare. Walk arounds of restored warbirds do not show this but it makes perfect sense to me.

Good morning. Up before the family and quietly worked the bench. More test fitting.
Quite the sight right now.
Plug glued in with filing and sanding commencing. A little filler here and there.
The wings are not glued in place as yet. Not until I have finished the plug shaping.

Looking good, great bit of scratchbuilding as well.
The prop blades looks very wide and short, are they suppose to be like that? Sorry for my lack of knowledge.

Confused as always, and somewhere in hiding on the Scandinavian peninsula...
Re: Jeff's bashes a Mk XVIII

I must say I am impressed.
On second thoughts, let's not go to Camelot. It is a silly place!
Re: Jeff's bashes a Mk XVIII
Sorry no pictures this morning. To much snow to move out of the way and had no time.
At any rate, the low back plug is finished and primered. The airframe is up on it's stilts. Canopy mold being made for a vac-form piece.
Final rubbing down in preperation for painting.
Things are shaping up nicely now.
