Greg's triumverate build.

Post by Gregers »

I'm planning on doing an Israeli Air Force (Hayl Ha'avir) Spitfire MK IX using the new Airfix kit. Not sure as yet if I will do a Cammo or grey one as I have markings for both. Build to start very soon. Sprue shot to follow.
I know this is a change from the model I stated I wanted to do but I can't find the post war markings for the MKXIV that I had somewhere.
All the best.

Glad I'm not the only one that puts decals 'in a safe place'.

It must be an age thing. :ha:

It probably is. I'm having to nip down to the local aircraft museum to pick up an Airfix MKIX Spitfire because I had the one from the stash in my hands on Tuesday and............   ooops I did it again.
On saying that there are some Academy MKXIV's a few feet away from me at work (I'm currently sat in my office in a warehouse full of models) so maybe I'll get one of those too :-D .

All the best.

It's a bit of a bind but someone has to do the job  and not many people get to have a model workbench at work. Most of the models are die-casts but we have quite a stock of plastic too. I got the Academy MKXIV today though and I have decided on the scheme and it's going to be something pretty different and most definitely post war.

All the best.

Greg

Addendum, The model also will need a bit of cutting and re-building and a part from another Spitfire.

I can't wait to get started. Hopefully that will be tonight, starting with cutting of plastic though I am not 100% sure of how to go about what I want to do yet but it entails cutting either one or maybe two of the kits.

All the best.

Right. I've made a start a few days ago and just got round to uploading the pictures to photobucket. They are uploaded and they are there just not in my album or anywhere I can get them to link. Here's a progress report anyway. The MKIX and MKXIV airframes are complete except for the XIV's tailplanes. The modifications are done to TWO of them (Changed my mind on the MKIX, Still Israeli just a different aircraft). Some interior painting has been done on the MK22 but no assembly as yet. Pics have as I said been taken on the builds and of the blood (I did an oops) and as soon as I can get photobucket to co-operate I will get them on here.

All the best.

I found a long winded way of doing the linking so here goes.

Box shot.

Sprue shot of Academy kit and Airfix MK22 (Just sizing things up, Mind changed as to what I am doing here.
Image

ERRR where did that red stuff come from???
Image

That's where. (taken after the bleeding stopped)
Airfix MKIX with clipped wings and pointed rudder from unfinished Bilek kit
Image

Work progressing, cutting filling and filing/sanding under way.
Image

It's getting there.
Image

Wingy thingies.
Image

Dividers being very versatile.
Image

Two airframes together. First coat of paint on the MKIX
Image

After much filing and carving and heating the canopy and splaying it out (Not to mention some Anglo-Saxon English being used) the Airfix MK22 canopy almost fits the Academy MKXIV.

That's where I'm at at the moment.

All the best.

Nice progress, and very nice IAF decals. Which kit did they come with? They would have saved me a lot of work.

Nice progress, I don't know if I'd have the nerve to do something like that.

The decals are from the Bilek kit, They do two versions with Israeli markings in.

The chop job on the MKXIV is one of those 'try it and see' jobs. If I had not been able to get the tear drop canopy to fit I would have just built up the rear fuselage again and done it as a high back.

Cheers for the kudos guys.

All the best.
