Ralph's wholly uninteriesting OOB MK XXII
I fear I'm developing a reputation for not finishing UAMF group build projects. I'm about 1 in 7 right now. So in an effort to reverse the trend I'm going to build a simple kit with no fuss and no muss. An Airfix F.22 right out of the box with no modifications, an a simple high-speed silver finish.
Step the first
Painted the prop yellow, which I will mask at the tips and then paint black.
I also gave the cockpit parts a dark green spray. These will be oversprayed with a semi-transluscent coat of a pale green.
Step 2.
Ok, so it's not entirely a no fuss build. I couldn't resist opening the side door. Simple cutting. No big deal. Here you can see the pale green overspray and some painted details. Needs a bit of touchup, as I did the cutting after I had it painted.

Re: Ralph's wholly uninteriesting OOB MK XXII
Thanks all.
David, I bet you I can build an uninteresting spitfire
I made a bit more progress. I glued up the fuselage tonight and it looks as though I have the same gap problems as Paul did on his kit. Wings and canopy fit fine though.

Looks interesting to me. Will be watching with interest. Oddly enough when I built mine I didn't have a gap issue on the fuselage?. I must have done something wrong that worked out right for me. Still on my next one I will sand down the interior parts to ensure it doesn't happen so cheers for the heads up.
All the best.

Ok, so I'm really puzzled about how to fix the small gaps between the upper and lower halves of the portion of the cannon barrels attached to the wing roots. I tried putty but it fell out once dried. Same problem with super glue.
I'm really stuck :-(

This is most assuredly NOT intended as a criticism, but I can tell you from experience and experiment that all of the later Airfix kits have very tight tolerances. If you have paint on the fuselage sides where the instrument panels and other bulkheads fit, you WILL have a gap in front and behind the cockpit. If you have paint on the edges of the IP/bulkheads as well, it WILL be worse.Softscience wrote:

If they are clean, and if you've given them a tiny swipe with fine wet&dry before starting (to make certain there is no fine (almost invisible) flash) on the edges it WILL fit perfectly.
Either mask the fuselage interior with narrow strips of tape in the locating positions while you paint, or be prepared to sand the edges of the bulkheads back.
Better to do this than filling the fuselage, because the canopies are precise fits too, and if the fuselage is a tad wide...

Can you try some pva/wood glue? I use wood glue for small spaces, it floats in nicely often covering the little gaps.Softscience wrote:Ok, so I'm really puzzled about how to fix the small gaps between the upper and lower halves of the portion of the cannon barrels attached to the wing roots. Ditto the PVA route! Quite handy for tight rounded contours. It may need a couple of days to cure completely which is the only issue I've had with PVA. Interesting how this GB has shown some of the issues with these kits. Not put me off wanting to buy a MK.22 though...

Thanks for the tips guys.
Shane, I will certainly be trying the masking trick on my next airfix build.
Prisca and MDT. Will attempt the PVA trick tonight.

Re: Ralph's wholly uninteriesting OOB MK XXII
The PVA worked in a sense, but I still have the problem of the cannon barrel roots being of a smaller circumference than the barrels themselves.
On the bright side, I managed to fix most of the self-inflicted fit problems. There was a lot of sanding and rescribing, so a fear an NMF finish may show off too many errors. Time to find something interesting in camo
