Paul's Tornado - Hasegawa-style

Post by PaulBradley »

I'll be building the Hasegawa 'Gulf War' Tornado GR.1 in standard 1980's RAF camo and in the markings of 617. I have a set of Airwaves resin wings with dropped flaps and slats, and some other AM goodies - hopefully, I won't get too bogged down in the details, though!

Pics to follow.

Ah nice Paul, I was sorely tempted by 80's camo, must do a Tornado in that scheme sometime.

I agree - it's a cool scheme, Jim. I also have the ESCI kit, which is based on the prototypes, so I might do that one with the very early LAG undersides.

Anyways, to this build. Here's the box art:

Image

The parts are moulded in Sand, so that kiddies don't need to paint it, presumably.....

I have various AM accessories. Airwaves resin seats:

Airwaves, resin wings with drooped slats and flaps:

Aires resin wheel bays. While meant for the Revell kit, they will fit this kit with a little trimming:

And an Eduard PE set, mainly for the cockpits:

Finally, I acquired a set of decals for the standard Hasegawa Tornado GR.1, which have the 617 Sqn markings. I don't have the instruction sheet for this, so if anyone does, could they please scan the decal placement guide for me?

Not much done today so far - just washing the parts.

Some good progress today. I did some detail painting with the cockpits, wheel wells and air intakes. I decided not to use the Eduard PE for the IPs, as the kit ones are quite nice, and I can use the PE for the ESCI kit I have.

I trimmed the resin main wheel wells to size, and got them and the wings glued in place:

And the intake gubbins and top fuselage piece:

Here, you can see the U/C bay in place:

I decided not to use the front wheel well, as the Hasegawa kit has it moulded in place underneath the cockpit tub and it will be too much trouble to replace it, for little gain - after all, it won't be seen on the finished model.

There are times when you wonder why you bother...... :-|

At home today 'cos I have a stinking cold. Thought I'd put some time to use by getting some modelling done. Mistake.

There are numerous issues. First, I realised the wings are warped:

Image

Image

Tried the hot water trick to try to straighten them, but it didn't help much. May try again later. :frown:

Next.

I realised that I'd knocked off part of the port wing's inner slats. I see from the photo above that I did this over the weekend and didn't notice until today. Needless to say, I can't find the bit. I might be able to replace it with some plastic card.

Image

Next.

There are some stress cracks in the plastic. I am not sure if it is because of the superglue, or whether Hasegawa's sand plastic is just brittle:

So I am not going to touch this model until next weekend. Then, I'll consider my next move. :-|

I should have stuck to Spitfires.....

Sorry to hear about you troubles (and cold). Sometimes a build just hates you. You either find out who's more stubborn, or write it off as a lousy way to spend your time.

It is a good kit (I have 2 or 3 in my stash) but the nose is slightly too short.

I have the instructions you require somewhere, however, I am not sure how to scan and upload photos so if nobody else has them I will copy them and post them to you.

Cheers, Ian - I'll let you know.

You are right, Jim - this will be a challenge. Right now, I'm not up for it, but I will take another look at the weekend and see what I think then. Thanks for the support, guys.

Cheers, Andrew - much better, thanks!

I'm thinking I might have one last shot at straightening the wings. I fit doesn't work, I'll cut them out and replace them with the kit wings. I'll give it a shot tomorrow.
