North American Mustang Mk.III

Post by Narayan »

Greetings!

It seems there are a few Mustangs for this group build. I am also partaking in the Mustang group build so what better kits to use than a Hasegawa combo kit!

Anyone know what make of paints Hasegawa are quoting in their instructions? Their own?

To the best of my knowledge, Hasagawa don't produce any paints. The number on their instructions are Gunze and Mr.Color. I've never even seen any of those in real life, but they are the standard lines of paint in Japan.

Yep Gunze paints, they are arcrylics and quite good especially for airbrushing.

About time I made some progress with this one. The instrument panel has a decal however it can't really be seen so is a bit of a waste. Everything has gone together very nicely so far. I also did a dry fit of the fusalage and that went well.

That's all so far, I hope to make a good bit of progress this weekend. Famous last words.

The kit goes together quite nicely. There is a thin gap between the fusalage and starboard wing though. It's a little to wide for something like Tipp-Ex so looks like I might have to use filler.

Apologies for the lack of updates. I'm doing two group builds at once and with life getting in the way it's hard to find time to get any significant time at the laptop let alone the bench!

Anyway. I've painted the underside and one of the colours topside (although there will need to be further painting in this regard).

I'm using Blu-Tak for masking and this is new for me. So, here goes!

I put a couple of seatbelts in the cockpit and the painting is now done. Going to tackle the decals next which will involve some trimming for the 617 squadron invasion stripes.

Very nice Narayan. I also endorse the blu-tak method for this type of hard(ish) edged camouflage. The thing to watch out for is that sometimes the blu-tak can leave a residue, especially on matt paints (guess how I found that out  ) and so I use a protective coat of varnish, which is left for 24 hours before applying the blu-tak.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Thanks for the comments Andrew / Shaun.

Interesting Shaun, what varnish do you use?

I've started the decal process but I need to be careful with these as there are quite a few for the invasion stripes and some need trimming.

Image

The trimming I was referring to was on the wings. The set I got with the kit stretch the entire width of the wings. However on the aircraft I am making they do not extend over the wings. So far then the fusalage has been done (more to do under here) and the underside of the wings.
