Chris's Twin Mustangs ***FINISHED***
No, not an F-82, but two monogram P-51Ds I have in the stash.
One will be natural meatl and the other OD.

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
Monogram seems to be the kits of choice for this GB. COOL!

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
I built this kit many years ago, Chris. I believe it's from 1977?
Used aftermarket decals. You can see it in the gallery. Enjoy the build

Confused as always, and somewhere in hiding on the Scandinavian peninsula...

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
I just was looking at those Sissel, very nice.
I have built the monogram B many times, never the D but I have three of them so I want to build a few of them.
If I have time I may also build the Hasegawa 1/48 P-51D and an ICM P-51C I have or even the old Otaki Mustang i have. I want to do at least one in invasion stripes.

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
You will like the kit Chris. I have done a few. Two areas as a heads up. 1. The ammo bay hatch is molded flat and should have a slight curve to match the wing airflow. Of course if you leave it open no worries. 2. That pesky under nose piece is poor fitting. Had to shim mine. If left off, the piece should be cut in two along the panel line.
Looking at your other ponies, you will have no problems with this one.

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
Setteled on the markings, one will be Claude Crenshaw's Louisanna heatwave and the other Glen Egaleston's Mustang

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
Doing some reseach on the 354th FG, it was the first unit equiped with P-51B mustangs, in 1943, but in November of 1944 (yes, 1944) they converted to Thunderbolts! (and a thunderbolt is how we often see Eagleston's plane depicted, yet he had no kills in them, only Mustangs!)
The unit was reconverted in january of 1945 after constant complaining about the switch.

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
Making two of these, one an 8th air force machine and the other a 9th airforce machine.
The kit is from 1977 and is conventional Monogram in layout.
Aftermarket decals will be used for both, from the one on the left it will be Glenn Eagleston's machine, you can see his eagle in the lower right quadrant of the sheet on the left. The other will be 'Louisanna heat wave' a green nosed machine

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
First step is to do the control panel, which is hardly visable
The cockpits are assembled and painted
Next the inside of the fuselages are painted with interior green
The two pilots are painted next

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
The cockpits are glued into the fuselages as well as the engine exauhts and the tailwheels
The fuselages are joined, and we see a huge problem with this kit type, there is a panel to show the motor on the bottom and the cover doesn't fit snugly so its putty time
The putty is sanded and the tape removed, the panel looks a little better

Re: Chris's Twin Mustangs
Lovely progress. I wonder if we could do a swap for the VF*D Jan markings sometime?

I think Jan was Lt Robert Dickmyer's but I will have to check when I get home from work.
