Agreed, another top tip to add to the list for when I eventually get around to building mine.

Thanks guys, my laptop charger fried itself over the weekend and I am currently offline with all my files trapped in a laptop with a flat battery, will be a lurker from the public library until I track down a replacement.

Good stuff here, David. Wonderful tip on wheel alignment.

Good news, there's few things more frustrating than having the laptop or PC go u/s when there's modelling to be done and photographed!

I have begun painting the body, the deep green plastic has been 'killed' using a thin coat of light grey and the ends and side timbers have been painted in light stone.

The wooden body and end panels have been painted in light Stone and Dark Green and the canvas sides and roof are coloured in slightly different shades. I have deliberately moved away from the kit instructions because all vehicles were painted in a second colour for El Alamein and it is logical to assume that this also would have been treated in this way to blend in with normal trucks, there would also have been an identification roundel on the roof for the same reason, the patterns are pure guesswork as I have been unable to find any suitable shots of the full exterior of this vehicle at that time but can say that after El Alamein it wore this scheme thoughout the Italian campaign. The cab is here glued down but it did cause a few problems when built in instruction sequence and the cab front/scuttle and radiator were removed and repositioned slightly to get the correct fit.

Seems to be coming together nicely, I like the idea of differing the cam colours.

It was originally captured from the Italians before Montgomerys' time in command and the command body was removed from the Lancia truck, fitted to a Retreiver chassis and finished in an overall Light Stone. It remained thus until it received its green disruptive in the field prior to El Alamein and it still wore this (by then badly faded) colour sceme thoughout the Italian campaign. The original rear sun awning was very different to that modelled by MB/Revell and I have fitted my model with that original awning. When it was shipped back to the UK it was given a full rebuild and repainted in SCC15 Olive Drab, at that time it would have received the more robust foul weather rear awning depicted in the kit.

Finished at last, the 8th Army Leyland Retreiver Command Caravan GOC modelled (as far as I can tell) as it would have appeared at the time of El Alamein.

Great result David. This is a very imposing vehicle and a great choice of subject by Matchbox.
