Lancfan's LCM3 Royal Navy Landing Craft *** FINISHED ***

Post by lancfan »

Having lost a week and a half due to a dead laptop charger my GB output has lessened somewhat however I can't let this end in just one model so here is my second build, the Airfix LCM3 Landing Craft.

This is an extremely simple kit and although it is quite old the extra details needed to bring it up to date are easily done. the deck has been glued to the hull and it has been set aside to dry before continuing. It also seemed a good idea to build something a little different and this Royal Navy D-Day landing craft fitted the bill.

This is a proper golden oldie David. I think this was very innovative of Airfix, a great little set.

Dead laptop should mean more modeling output .... unless you are printing parts

The basic hull is now complete and the rear decking has been extended and cleaned flush for new detailing and a wipe of filler has been applied to hide the join.

With the Land rover out of the way I can concentrate on this landing craft, I don't have anything in my library for these boats and I have been unable to find much useful online reference material for these things and have found that there seems to have ben a lot of variation in their layouts aside from the known basic differences between USN and RN deck furniture. There may have been distinct production differences between the various boatyards building them and possibly there were service modifications made to them periodically by or for the USN & RN. I also think that unlike aircraft and AFVs these have been forgotten parts of the war and given how little I have found online compared to other genres the information we take for granted when modelling other types of machine has just not been gathered or published for these boats and indeed much of what material survives may be forgotten, still be in private or company hands. I have been unable to confirm the accuracy for the boat depicted in the kit, much of what I have found is of very poor quality and I have been reduced to comparing pictures of built models to the very poor full size images. Althugh I will use the kit decals I am unable to check anything for this boat and will regard this as a generic model of a typical Royal Navy LCM3 D- Day landing craft. This is the model as it now stands, the wheelhouse has just been replaced by a more accurate one of plastic card.

The deck around the wheelhouse has been covered in fine wet-or-dy paper to give it a fine texture, the bases for the vents have been cyano'd to each corner of the deck.

That looks great David. It's a shame that there is so little info out there in respect of these vessels, I dare say it took a lot of guts to sail one of those up to a landing beach to deliver the "goods" and the efforts of those men shouldn't be forgotten.

I have a fair amount, from an incomplete DragonWagon hauling an LCM project, here's a few things to get you started.

Depending on your desire for accuracy, the biggest thing usually needing correction is the configuration of the cables for lowering/raising the ramp .... ask away ....

I love the idea to use fine wet/dry paper for texture!

Progress has slowed while I make four matching deck vents from Miliput, here one finished vent is in position with the other three in various stages of completion in the foreground.

I agree with Jeff that's nice scratch building going on.

That’s always been one of my favourite Airfix kits.
