Chip's German Spitfire+++Finished+++
I know that the Germans used a captured Spitfire for evaluation purposes, having first fitted it with a Daimler Benz engine. And I know that it is a frequently modeled aircraft, but for this build I am going to use a Mk1a Spitfire, wrapped in the winter camoflage of a FW 190A-4. Now that should look different.
The volunteers for this marriage are;
Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk1a:
Paint guide and Decals from Admiral 1/72 Focke-Wulf 190A-4:
Should be a harmonious combination:

Re: Chip's German Spitfire
Due to work commitments I am suddenly quite short on 'me' time, so I have revised my plan a little.
Rather than doing a new build I will now be using my recently built Spit as a clothes-horse for the German scheme.
When I built this I used Airfix's new decalfix solution which, according to the website, can be used on a matt paint surface. This was the outcome:
The decals were also quite badly out of register, and was therefore consigned to the back of my display case.
At least now, thanks to this GB, it can get a new lease of life.

That sounds like a good recovery plan.

My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.
Re: Chip's German Spitfire
Agreed, Splash. That's a proper mess of silvering with the decals.
I'd be tempted to take the aerial wire off before you start. If you're anything like me you'll end up breaking it at some point.

Re: Chip's German Spitfire
I have made a start by scraping/sanding off the decals, and as prophesized by Ian I have not only broken the aerial wire, but knocked off the spinning prop as well. They will be easy to replaced at the end though. I have also managed to locate a stand for it from the spares box.Ian wrote:I'd be tempted to take the aerial wire off before you start. As the upper camouflage is predominantly white I am going to put a couple of coats of primer on to cover the RAF scheme, which means masking up the canopy again, my least favourite job.

Re: Chip's German Spitfire
It's a pity the scheme has white around the canopy. If it was RLM 71 you could have gotten away with green you've got on there. Not to worry, Chip. You're up to the masking!

Re: Chip's German Spitfire
Another German conversion. This GB is drawn to that.
Will be pretty when done.

I've said this in Beanys thread already (and I'm sure this won't be the last) but everything looks good in WWII German markings!

Masking has been done (easier than I thought) and a couple of coats of primer applied:

Re: Chip's German Spitfire
Quick update, I have applied a coat of RLM 76 light grey to the bottom, and a coat of white over the top. No point putting up a picture as it is pretty much the same as the one above.
