Ians Kross-Dressing Krauts - COMPLETE

Post by Ian »

As the title suggests I am going to switch schemes on a couple of German aircraft. An Airfix Albatross and an Academy -109. Red Baron meet Heinz Barr!

These are both being built from scratch and I am really looking forward to getting started.

The 109 is going to look sweet in the Albatross markings especially if it will be the darker one.

I like the idea of the wood effect 109 with a red tail, very retro.

These will be fun to watch!
A wooden Messerschmitt with red tail. Lovely choice.

A quick session this morning.

The kit parts.
Albatross

-109

And some progress.....

There are some fairly hefty ejector pin marks on both of the Albatrosses wings. These have been filled. I've also painted a coat for RLM02 on its interior and stuck the 2 halves together. I can add Heinz at a later stage. Also cleaned up some of the larger parts ready for assembly.
I've built the -109 tub but I don't have any H62 to paint it, so I will have to pop to Hobbycraft tomorrow morning. Also assembled the wings.

Paint purchased! Paint applied!

Just need to work out a decent way to get a woodgrain effect now.....

And the Albatross has been built (as far as I can at this stage) and some H30 has been applied. But that's only cos my H116 has dried up, which I didn't know about till I got back from Hobbycraft with the sand for the -109! H30 will do.

Are you leaving the 109 cockpit open and swapping the pilots?

I am tempted to as the Albatross pilot has his right arm raised. I think I can use that to have him reaching up to close the canopy. I'll see how he fits once the tub is in place. And make sure he can reach the open canopy section! Am I right in thinking there was a piece of cord for the pilot to pull it closed with?

I think there was a handle on the port side of the frame, which was the latch.

Remember there is almost no clearance from the canopy to the top of the pilot's head - it's a really cramped cockpit!

Cheers

Thanks Andrew. I've tried searching YouTube for any clips but nearly all show the ground crew closing the canopy for the pilot.
