Ians Kross-Dressing Krauts - COMPLETE

Here we are then. May I present the Academy Bf-109 of Heinz Barr and the Airfix Albatros of Manfred Von Richthofen - in each others paint schemes and markings.





















They even swapped aircraft for the photoshoot. Heinz is not impressed!


And Manfred is wondering what this canopy thing is.


All in all I've achieved what I set out to do. I think both models 'look' the part. The -109 appears more effective (to my eyes) because of the Hs-129, which is a biplane wearing RLM 70/71 over 65. But I really wanted to see the -109 with a wooden fuselage and red nose and tail. And I'm impressed with how they both came out. The Albatros was not the best kit to work with (being an Airfix classic) but with some perseverance it doesn't look too bad. Might have been better had I rigged it but, hey-ho. Lazy modeller syndrome strikes again!

They both look fantatic - well done Ian. I like the wood effect, how did you do it?

I wouldn't worry about the rigging, I am not fully convinced by rigged 1/72 bi-planes, it always looks to busy and overscale to my eyes and certainly not like the 1/1 biplanes I used to maintain.

I like them both, two great builds

Excellent work, Ian! They really have turned into something special.
I fancy both schemes, but my favorite is the wooden Messerschmitt. Von Richthofen doesn't look comfortable though.

The Albatross looks like it could have been a scheme from the first world war.I like the Messerschmitt too.

I like the wood effect, how did you do it?

Just painted with H62. Once dried I dipped a wide, fairly stiff brush in H63, dabbed off onto kitchen roll and then dragged lightly from front to rear several times. Then the same again with H71 then H26. Finally a couple of coats of Klear. It's certainly something I'll be using again.
I guess you could start with a different base colour and different 'streaks' to represent lighter or darker wood.

I did think about masking each of the panels and 'graining' them individually. Too much like hard work though but would have looked good.
