Chip's Airfix Mk III ***Finished***
Yet another Mk. III to add to the collection already being built in this GB:
Not that many parts so should go together quite quickly. I am undecided on the scheme to do at the moment, probably the 616 Sqn., Lübeck, Germany option.

Re: Chip's Airfix Mk III
Made a start by assembling the seat and adding a scrap of plastic behind the seat, which needs a couple of ribs to be added to represent the "Leading Ramp" (whatever that is). This has all received a coat of black.
The nose has been filled with bits of lead secured in place with bluetack. I reckon it should be enough weight to prevent it from being a tail sitter.
The pilot has also had a bit of colour added:
A bit of touching up required all round (which only became apparent in the photos) before the pilot can be glued in and the fuselage can be put together.

Re: Chip's Airfix Mk III
A Little more progress has been done, the leading ramp has had a bit of detail added, and a bit of dry brushing with silver. After a dry fit I realised that even more lead would be required to prevent it from being a tail sitter, so that has been blue tacked in:
To make a change from the norm I have decided to position the elevators in the drooped position, so I am carefully separating the tailplanes:

Re: Chip's Airfix Mk III
I have decided to do a little something different for the engine intakes as well. I have re-sized a picture of what the intake looks like, and printed them out onto some paper:
I then cut away the splitter and glued the top and bottom sections in place. Once dry I trimmed them to size around the backing plate and glued the splitter into place.
Dry fitted to see how it looks:
I have also started to tackle the framing out of the wheel wells, as suggested in Splash's thread.

It's my model and I'll do what I want with it.

Very clever Chip.
Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale
Re: Chip's Airfix Mk III
Great work so far and a god idea the shelf behind the pilot seat to pack more weight in. I may have to do the same...

IIRC I saw you do likewise with an IP printout, so thanks for that.splash wrote:That's a cunning plan, I like it.

Progress is slow due to the great weather we are experiencing at the moment, but I have managed to get a couple of bits done.
The wheel wells have been tarted up with some sticky tape, and they have received a coat of klear prior to painting silver:
I have also filled in the relevant aileron errors ready for rescribing:
I was not happy with the size of these (anyone know what they are and why?), as they seem to be too pronounced, so I am sanding them down a bit:

Fixed trim tabs, not very well defined.

The wheel wells have now received a coat of silver, as has the landing light area:
The ailerons have been sanded and rescribed:
I hope to get the main construction completed tomorrow ready for some colour at the weekend as it is due to be cooler in the UK then.
