Bluesteels Airfix Meteor III ***FINISHED***

Post by bluesteel »

As I finished earlier than I thought with my NF14 so... As I see John, Jeff and Chip having such fun with their Airfix Meteor III's I thought I'd join them

Not sure what scheme I'll do it in yet, but the build will be mostly OOB. Might try the thin cut label technique for the wheel wells and give the pilot a stick.

Made a start:

Nose packed with fishing weights and held in with Blutak. I'll probably put some in the front of the engines too.

Well, OK. not quite out of the box. Poor pilot needs a control column and something to rest his feet on. Also some gubbins added to the intakes:

Looking like a Meteor now with wings and tail surfaces attached:

Image

Having spent ages cramming weights wherever I could, I have now spent ages removing it all as the scheme I want to do is best shown as an in flight model. I won't say which one, people can guess as it develops... :)

Canopy in it's second dip of Klear. Next to tone down some of the rivets and clean up seams once it's set.

With the small mod to the nose, those with a little Google search ability should be able to tell me the serial number of the Meteor I'm building

EE389?
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Correct.

However it could also be EE397 as there were a couple of Mk IIIs loaned to Flight Refuelling Ltd for trials. But the air to air photos I've seen are of 389, so I'm doing that one.

Actually I might change it to EE397 as I've just found a colour photo of it with a nice blue nose, but I suspect both were in the same scheme, the only visible difference being the serial number as they carried no Squadron codes while with Flight Refuelling.

Something a little left field is always good Julian, nice choice.

Camo going on.

The Airfix Mk III is a great build, a real gem, even though it doesn't have the detail of the Cyberhobby/Dragon kit. I think I'll get another, eBay here I come...

Camo on both upper and lower surfaces. The green is Hu30 and looks too dark, in the photo it's almost olive drab. But I have been assured by a photography 'expert' that although there may have been some fading, the washed out colours are more down to the earlier types of colour emulsion used at the time. But I'm still not certain, should I repaint in a more olive drabby colour I wonder?

I don't know, Julian. Your colors look ok to me. Really looking sharp.

If you can scan that photo into Photoshop, you can adjust the colours - they don't look right in the photo....
