Nice work Shaun, its threads like this that makes me want to move over to the dark side away from a/c, one day I might crack and give it a go.

Many thanks Splash, I'm pleased that you've found the thread to be of interest and I hope that you will give military vehicle modelling a go, the more the merrier. For me it is a straight 50/50 interest between aircraft and military vehicles (I build quite a few "soft skins" as well as armoured vehicles) - it's been like that since I started in the early '70's and probably will remain so until I can't pick up me tweezers and glue anymoresplash wrote:Nice work Shaun, its threads like this that makes me want to move over to the dark side away from a/c, one day I might crack and give it a go.

Re: Tamiya 1/35th Tiger I Ausf E (old tool)
For the last two evenings, I've been Having Fun With Feifel. Not.
Below is a pic of the Feifel air cleaner system tubes, or rather the one side that I've managed to complete. This is one area where I think the newer kits will probably really outshine this old timer. The tubes are made from the "classic" '70's vinyl that Tamiya favoured for this sort of thing. Ugh! it's not the nicest of materials IMHO, was difficult to use and after all the effort does not capture the look of the real thing at all, being too smooth for starters. I did cast around for some alternative material but came up with nothing and after I ran out of ideas I decided to make the best I could of it. I have tarted the tubes up a little by attempting to replicate the prominent joining gaskets out of thin plastic card, which was drilled through and slid over the tubes. Not totally accurate but in the right ball park I think. I can see the need to get creative with a little filler however (damn super macro setting )
The only other thing of note that I've accomplished this week is to fit the bow plate spare track holder together with the front and rear towing shackles. The track, you will note, is missing. Alas the spare track provided has absolutely no detail on its inner face which is unfortunately the side facing the audience. A search through my spares box did not reveal an alternative so I have elected to leave the spare track off.
More Fun With Feifel tomorrow evening no doubt!
Thanks for looking.

Cheers Nigel. Despite my whinging over the vinyl Feifel gear I am enjoying building this old kit, honest

I think Tamiya's 1:35 range is superb. In the past I've built a Panther, a Bradley, an Abrams, an M-48, a Sherman, one of the German armoured cars and an M-113. If they weren't so expensive I'd probably buy some today. But I do keep seeing a PzkpfwII in Hobbycraft for a reasonable sum. Just need to sneak it past Mrs. Ian.....

I agree wholeheartedly Ian, Tamiya make superb military vehicle kits. I think the old kits like this one, where available, are quite cheap but a lot of the new stuff is beyond what I am prepared to pay. Some of Tamiya's armour kits are over £40 now and there's no way I'm paying that sort of money for a model kit. I believe that Revell have some nice new armour kits that come in under £30. From Revell's 1/35th range I've built their PZH2000 self-propelled gun (although I received that kit free with a magazine subscription) and more recently their Mercedes-Benz Wolf 4x4 and both were enjoyable builds. I quite fancy squeezing one of their new 1/35th Leopard kits past the ever vigilant Mrs W

Re: Tamiya 1/35th Tiger I Ausf E (old tool)
Tonight I've managed to finish up my Having Fun With Feifel session, with the second set of pipes offering up little resistance due to the fact that I'd worked out how to tackle them last night.
I've also made a start on the wiring for the turret smoke candles. Of course, this is a little speculative based upon a photo of a tank captured in Tunisia (see earlier discussion in this thread). Material used is three strands of 5 amp fuse wire twisted together with three strands teased out to mate up with the rear of the candles. The turret has been drilled next to the main mounting bracket for the candles and the wire passed inside and secured. Two part epoxy resin was used for this exercise to give a little additional working time over the superglue. Yes, I should have drilled out the back of the candles to make the wiring easier but I forgot and now they're mounted I couldn't get the drill at them properly (and I ain't taking them off again for fear of damage) My aim here was to capture the feel of how the electrical wiring probably looked - i.e. I got bored of looking at myriads of photos in an attempt to find a good accurate shot
That's it for now and hopefully I will be able to wire up the other smoke candles either tomorrow or over the weekend, although I've got a lot on.
Thanks for looking.

Very nice work on the air pipes Shawn. You're really showing what can be done with a little bit of "modeling skills required"
The fact is, you're leaving my newer tooled tiger in the dust at this point

Guys, many thanks for your kind words, they are very much appreciated. I had hoped to carry on this evening but, alas, real life has intervened. With a bit of luck, I'll manage to grab some bench time in the morning.

You lucky bugger, I was unsure as to the meaning of Feifel so Googled it and came up with Tanya Feifel:ShaunW wrote:Tonight I've managed to finish up my Having Fun With Feifel session,
Oh, and some pictures of external air precleaners on the Tiger in Bovington Museum.

Re: Tamiya 1/35th Tiger I Ausf E (old tool)
Yes Chip, that would be a fun evening, certainly better than sticking vinyl tubes to a model tank (possibly Ms Feifel would have had another suggestion for the use of vinyl!!!), but I would have experienced some difficulty in getting that Feifel past Mrs W and besides, I don't know if my back's up to it these days
I've managed to have only quite limited time at the bench this weekend. Today, however, I did at least manage to put a coat of paint on. The colour is Tamiya XF-60 Dark Yellow applied by airbrush and the wheels, side skirts and rear mudguards have also been painted although for the time being they remain on the sprues. The paint behaved very well and went without issues. Here's a quick tour round:
Prior to painting I also wired up the right hand side smoke candles with 5 amp fuse wire as with the left hand side
And I also replaced the turret hatch grab handles with brass wire inserted into pre-drilled holes and fixed with superglue. The turret hatches are only temporarily held closed using Tamiya masking tape on their undersides as I will have a bash at painting a couple of crew figures.
With a bit of luck I will manage to apply further paint before my hols.
Thanks for looking.
