Test fit showed a tight fit. I wonder if I'm doing something wrong? ;-)

I admittedly haven't done much with the kit all week, but I spent some time upgrading the round fuel drums that go on the rear hull sides. The kit parts built up into solid little cylinders, but the flat sides should be set inwards a bit. I drilled the sides out and inserted some epoxy putty to form new sides. The seems still need cleaning, and I'll add strip styrene carrying handles to finish out the pieces once the epoxy has dried.

I'm finished with all but a few of the kit parts. I need to add the side grab handles, but they're very fragile and I want to add some scratched detail before I add them.

This will include
1) a rolled tarp made of epoxy on the fender
2) add some detail to the small ports on the hull sides
3) add a commander's hatch.
4) add lift rings to the gun.

Are the four fuel drums correct for an SU? Unlike T-34s I have barely studied the SU vehicles at all, but T-34s only had three cylindrical fuel drums fitted (as opposed to the four that some kits give them). I would have thought that the SU would be the same, but could easily be mistaken on that score.

I have spent the last two hours working with the good for nothing POS tracks. I am just short of foaming at the mouth right now. I am cursing the Russian injected plastics industry and am ready to punch somebody out!

One run completed. I added axles to the wheels (thanks for skipping that step Eastern Express :???: ) and made them removable to facilitate adding the track and later painting it.

One down.

I may take a few days off before coming back to the next one.

Not too keen on this kit at the moment

I thought these things were pretty ad hoc.

I can't find a photo where all four positions are visible all at once, but here is one with 2 on the starboard

and another with two at port

I recently built the SU-85 and that has 4 fuel drums.

You seem to be making a good job of this one.

Not really, so far as I know. Either the vehicle had the necessary brackets in place, or it didn't. As I say, for T-34s, there were three positions for the cylindrical drums, and three only.

Your photos seem to prove pretty definitely that the SUs had four positions, so there you go. Maybe they were expected to travel further, or the crews weren't expected to need the space on the hull to stow other stuff? Beats me.

I'm surprised the tracks are giving you such grief, I quite liked them when I built my T-34.

Well I've just about gone batty, and some of the track is a bit...lets say...uneven. But its done.

Time to crank out a new commander's hatch, some lift rings and get this beasty ready for priming.

Pics soon

Sprayed on the dark green primer (from Vallejo). Once dry, a very light coat of green will be misted on to create some forced shadows.

This is coming along great. Recently I built an SU-100 and looked at scores of photos on Google and in every case the SU had mountings for four fuel drums - of course some vehicles were missing a drum here or there but plenty of wartime shots show SU's with four drums in place.
