Flute's Tiger Moth. Completed.

Post by Flute »

Just opening the thread, no need to panic yet...........

For those who weren't around, this is a 1/32nd kit, and in the special Biplane issue of Scale Models, way back when, there was an article on somewhat upgrading it. I'll be following this if I can dig it out of the midden. Revell reissued this kit a few years ago, and I have one of those, but also an original with the psychodelic plastic. Not sure which to build yet.

I think I have that issue somewhere as well - let me know if you can't find it.

Thanks for the offer Paul, but I found it. I may be a day or 2 late starting - Edinburgh festival is on and we have guests. Also searching for the floatplane transfers, my prefered choice, but the original box I have only contains the plastic. I built one for my daughter about 8 years ago and am sure I filed the ones from that kit because she specified her own decor, and I've already found the instruction sheet from it........

Oh, good - I was really thinking on this one, but I'd rather see what you do with it first !

OOB it's a dead easy kit, but I know what you're capable of so I'd expect you could easily go to town on it. Me, however, yeah, well, we'll see........

Just so's I have something for the official start, here's what Matchbox originally offered, and what was in the most recent Revell boxing.

The boxes (ta da!):

Sorry about the uneven lighting, the flash is playing up.

This, unmistakeably, is the Matchbox plastic:

.and this is the Revell:

Finally, here are the Revell transfers:

I say finally because I still haven't found the old Matchbox ones.

3 interesting options on the Revell sheet, but although they included the floats there is no option to use them. Hence as I said earlier I want to dig out the old sheet to do the red Matchbox floater. I'll look around for alternative schemes I could cobble together over the weekend in case I can't find them - or I may chicken out and use one of the Revell schemes.

But it's early days - I may build both kits. Time will tell............

What a shame they never brought out a 1/72nd version - I'd have seriously gone for those.

Hey, Paul - here's a scan from an old Aircraft Modelworld magazine. It's part of a 4-page article about unusual Tiggies, including floaters. I can scan in the rest ifyou are interested.

Paul,

That looks quite interesting, I'd be much obliged for a scan.

Paul,

Anything to report on the Tiger? Is it going to be a floater?

regards,

Martin

Hi Martin,

Paul kindly sent me the scans he mentioned, and I'll be doing a floaty thing, indeed. I've been waiting for the last of our guests to leave, and clearing my desk to concentrate on the Tiggy, so I'll start cutting plastic tomorrow.

Sometimes it feels that way.........

Should have something to post tomorrow. Despite all the good intentions I've decided not to do the float version - apart from improving a few kit items I don't want to get into anything major, while the most interesting floatplane version needs different floats scratching, extension of the radiator, and covering of the front cockpit. So I'm going to do the RAF offering from the Revell reissue transfer sheet, using the original mouldings. This is about the most common wartime Tiggy scheme of dark earth and dark green over trainer yellow, but with an interesting fuselage marking.

A floater will drift past eventually, but not here since I'll be using an old Airfix kit and a Scale Models article from 1973....

Okay, finally, we're off. Majority of the parts for the selected version de-sprued and cleaned up. Those still attached are either small enough to go wandering off if left alone, or left for painting.

Being original issue there's very little flash, although the black plastic is quite nasty to work with - it tends to smear and split rather than be sanded or cut. But that's been the case for everything I've seen in black (or red) plastic, from any manufacturer, modern or 40 years old, so expected. Anyway, you've got to have something to moan about, and if that's all I come up with (as I expect, being a fan of Matchbox) I'll be happy..........

I'm looking forward to your build of this one Paul. I remember being terribly impressed by these 1/32nd scale Matchbox kits back in my youth but I only ever got around to building the '109.
