Fred's Last Hours Spitfire - *** Finished!***

Post by fredk »

If VV can do a Fury in the time left then shurely I can do a Spitfire. I have been known to knock one out within 36 hours - which is like really, really, lightning fast for me. 36 days is about more my speed.
So here is the kit;

Now I know others have built this with the low back and I make no apologies for that is what I intend to do, because I want a low-back XVI for my line-up.
But a wee bit of panic set in there. This was a sealed kit. The sprues sealed in a plastic bag since it was new. But the bubble canopy is missing. Has Matchbox got a good spares dept? ummm, thought not, so a search through my spares got me the sliding portion of a Spitfire bubble canopy. I can match that with a windscreen cut from a hi-back set.
And the spare decal files will be ravished to provide markings cos the decals that came with this kit were a) water stained, b) well out of register. So a wee look at Wings Palette for some ideas will be in order.
Should be able to get some sticky and painty done tonight.

Right; got some done on it;
A spare resin Hurricane seat carved down, a control column from twisted electric wire, an i/p; A few paint marks on the fuse wall to represent fittings;
Image

Thin plasticard glued in the wheel wells to box them in; since the photo was taken this has been shaved down and the radiators fitted.
Image

The raised spine was cut off, but the new piece wasn't a good fit, so instead of just glueing it on I used plastic soup as both a glue and filler.;
Image
The soup was needed in a few other places too.

Time for sleep, and to let glue dry.

As of 11.20 this morning; main airframe built and first coat of paint on. Wheels, exhausts and prop ready to stick on. I made and fitted a pitot under the wing as the kit doesn't come with one.
Model is sitting in front window in sunlight to get the paint dry and hard for the top coats.
Have to look out decals later. And sort out the canopy.

Photos taken at 06.15 this morning. I reckon this is done now.
As one version of the personal Spitfire XVI of ACM Sir James Robb;

Extras on this were; a bit of a cockpit interior done. Both cannon on both wings replaced with hss stubs. Small stubs of hss infront of the slipper tank. The carb intake front gouged out a bit. A whip aerial fitted on the back, a pitot under the wing, both from hss again. Decals are all from my spares files. After a bit of searching I found the proper canopy for this kit from a previous built one. It doesnt fit as neatly as the one I was cobbling together.
It looks ok in the photos, it looks ok-ish from not too far but close up, its not so good. But its done now.

Finished at 06.10, so thats just about 30 hours.
