Paul's RAF Harvard **FINISHED**

Post by PaulBradley »

I'll be building the old Airfix kit, from an Airfix USA boxing:

Image

Terrible artwork - if the wheel is touching the ground (and producing smoke) why hasn't the starboard wingtip dug in? Or has the tyre just spontaneously combusted? The pilot is the size of a six-year-old, and that sky.....UGH!! What is more, they state it's a Harvard in the box, but don't provide RAF/RCAF markings, only markings for a USAAF Texan....

Never mind, rant over.....

I've some nice Freightdog decals to complete this one:

This is from their Weekend Warriors sheet.

Thas is a rather bad boxart, and why are they trying to sell models by showing one crashing?

The FD decals look supurb though.

Seems to be a common theme with Airfix USA - the Lightning, Buccaneer, Heinkel 111 and Do-17 box arts all featured burning aircraft, amongst others....they must have known that many juveniles added firecrackers to their models once they've served their purpose!

I agree about the box art, it's not very good.
The scheme you're going to do looks really interesting. :)

Talk about vintage box art... Who wants to attempt a box art build on this one?

What's juvenile about that? It is what PM kits are for. :ha:

To be fair to the boxart, its true to life the harvard, was remarkably hard to fly and killed loads of "students"

I'm sure you'd all love to see a photo of 'the parts':

Image

All twenty seven, excluding a two-part stand that I will not be using. Cleaned and oil-free, of course.

There's some quite fine rivet detail that I hope to retain, though the raised panel lines will be re-scribed and removed. The kit dates from 1962, and has no interior detail of note - just benches and poor pilot figures. I'll be adding some detail, but nothing too drastic - that greenhouse would show up a huge empty space if I do nothing.

Image

The engine/cowling is nothing to write home about. Good job really, as my Mum's not really into modeling....

Here's the informative instruction sheet:

Image

Decals are crap and went straight in the bin. They were cracked beyond repair - and I'll be using aftermarket anyway.

Hoping to make a start this long weekend, in between getting more done on my Matchboxes.

Moving right along, I made a start yesterday on some basic interior detail - I'm not going for accuracy, but for an impression thorugh the less than perfect canopy.

Some rib and stringer detail:

Image

Since then, I've added a floor and forward bulkhead. I need to sort out some IPs. Seats will be some generic resin US bucket seats I recently acquired from Squadron on sale.

This sentence made me laugh.
A sense of humour is a prerequisite with some kits. You're doing great work with it so far.

That kit looks a bit rough Paul. It makes the Heller kit look like a Tamiygawa offering.

I am sure you will beat it into shape.

Nice work so far. I agree with the statements about the box art. Looks like they are trying to pile it up on Mars!.

All the best.

Got the other fuselage half done and painted both sides, the seats and the floor. Need to find some suitable IPs and create a rollover pylon, then I can start gluing it all together...
