OK guys, the canopy got glued on and masked off and it was time to spray some paint!

After a lot of experimenting on a scrap model I quickly discovered that Humbrol 209 (Fluorescent Orange) has absolutely no covering power at all when used straight out of the airbrush . I made the decision to paint this troublesome colour first, before all the other colours, as I knew it'd be grief.

So I experimented with various undercoats first. Undercoating in white was no good, it makes the fluorescent orange go pink! Undercoating with grey also didn't work well, made it go a sort of muddy colour.

I tried various undercoats and primers on the scrap model and found out that the best and strongest fluorescent orange came about after undercoating it in yellow first, then misting the orange on in several thin coats.

So, back to the Harvard, job number one was to spray all the areas that are going to be fluorescent orange with a straight matt yellow undercoat.

And this is where we are now:

Fluorescent orange next! Gulp!

Yeah, right!

Fluorescent orange is a real PITA to paint.
I find brushing this color almost impossible, far too see through and many layers to help the opacity results in a thick coverage.

Looks like you have it under control after your testing. Good job. :)

Get some vodka to calm down, then carry on. :ha: :ha:

Thanks for the encouragement Prisca!

I have now sprayed the Humbrol 209 Fluorescent Orange over the yellow undercoat, it's really bright! 8-)

Now to wait until this has fully dried and then it's time for a huge masking session for the grey and silver.

Just catching up with your build. Its looking very bright & thanks for doing all the leg work with orange. I have only ever brush painted orange before & I found silver to be the best surface but like Sissel said, it goes on thick.

Your canopy framing is very impressive & great choice of music too.
Keep up the good work. 8-)

Special thanks to everybody for the positive comments and encouragement on my first ever Group Build, really appreciated, makes me feel like part of the community.

Back to the Harvard. After a mammoth masking session the fluorescent orange areas were finally all masked up ready for the grey and the silver.
I don't like masking, and this seemed to take ages, but it's done now, Oh Yeah! :bounce:

I am praying for zero bleed under the masking tape, as the fluorescent orange will not touch up well with a brush, that's for sure!

You can always spray fluorescent orange along the edges of the tape. That way if there is any bleed, it will be the orange.
Can't take credit for this idea, I read it somewhere else. Just sharing the love.

Great work so far. Can't wait for the unmasking.

All the best.

That's a great idea Nigel, I wish I had read your post before I started spraying the grey..... :frown:

Anyway, after the big masking session I have now sprayed the Dark Sea Grey (Humbrol 164).

Now it's time to do yet more masking ready for the silver.
