Re: Fred's Whiffery Spitfire
Well, the poll ended about 2 hours ago with the USN/Marines winning by a good margin.
Should be interesting.
I'll start this after the next few days.
I have to spend time working on the Results of a car rally from last Saturday. Results have to go out asap. Lots of mathmatical equations involved.

Re: Fred's Whiffery Spitfire
This has been started; some alterations to start off with;
Main wings; three gun tubes on each blanked off, bulges added over innermost bay ready for cannon, tips clipped. The fin is being enlarged with a fillet [mmmm, fillet, steak....] and bulges on each side of the nose above the exhaust ports. Lots of filler.
This has been rubbed down and a second coat of filler put on. The cockpit has been tidied up. A cushion on the seat back, [to cover up the slot for attaching the Airfix pilot], a control stick added.
Ever been to a McDonalds? ever bought one of their ice cream whotsits? you get a nice plastic cover for it. Great for small bits of plastic card. Also it is shaped, in sort of stepped panels around it. The edges of one of these panels were cut down and fitted pretty well over the front edge of the Spitfire front to form my engine bulges, just some filler to blend them in.
The coffee covers are useful too.

Great start Fred and it's good to know that Maccy D's are good for something, other than causing expanding waistlines
That's a good looking whif BTW Splash.

A tiny bit of extras in the cockpit; control column from twisted copper wire, an extension to the floor in front of the seat and a battery shelf behind the seat.

Re: Fred's Whiffery Spitfire
I couldn't be bothered with much 'proper' modelling this week so I've just been messing around with this.
This is it so far; white bits are either filler or plasticard;
The AIM9 Sidewinders were humongous on the wingtips; so these are specially issued shortened versions - the AIM9S/R [short] to be used only when the target is visually acquired.
An arrestor hook was made by heat stretching some angular sprue and just before it set, it was bent back to form the hook. A portion of the rear fuselage was filed flat and a small extra thickness added towards the front. The red hardpoints came from a Hawk 100 kit, the small missiles came from some 1/144 kit. The cannon came from the Matchbox Spitfire I did in the Ted Taylor Tribute Matchbox GB. Pitot moved from under the wing to wing leading edge. Volkes type airfilter added.
Just about ready to get spraying the white from a rattle-can.
I'll be doing this a Navy. I'll have to get drawing up some tail artwork and print out as decals.

Re: Fred's Whiffery Spitfire
I just started reading how you started going with it.....wow.
An highly powered engine must be needed to haul around all those missiles.

Just the ticket Fred, a proper whiff. It should look good in its USN markings.

Re: Fred's Whiffery Spitfire
Some paint applied. It was sprayed overall with white from a rattle can. It went on a bit thick and filled in some details. Then some parts were masked off and so far two coats of Humbrol 129 applied. Its going to need more coats as it looks very patchy. And it needs some touching in on the white underneath.
A Sundowner VF-111 design for the tail has been drawn up on the computer as well as 'USS CORAL SEA'; just need to print them out soon. The spares files have been raided for other useful decals.
