Nice work , Akan paints can be picked up in the UK now. These are all matched to actual Soviet / Russian colours.

Re: Dazzled's Mig-21PF
Thanks for the info . I was unaware that Akan paints were available in the UK. They do seem to be through one shop in Barnsley without a website though but, for a Mig modeller like me, I reckon an e-mail is in order.shangos70 wrote:Nice work , Akan paints can be picked up in the UK now. Re: Dazzled's Mig-21PF
With my exam over, I'm no longer a student. Well, until February when my next module starts. Yesterday was given over to de-stressing post module. In fact I was so de-stressed that I could barely stand up .
Today, however, I managed some overdue time at the bench .
And, taking my courage in both hands, started on the foil coating of the Mig.
I had an initial try on the external tank using Bare Metal Foil but I found it a bit fiddly and difficult to cut accurately. I did manage most of the tank body but the fins were a bit beyond BMF, in my ham fists anyway.
I then decided to raid the kitchen for some tinfoil and put a few bits on with Micro Scales foil adhesive (or PVA for those looking for a cheaper option). This had mixed results. I some places, notably the flat areas, the foil went on very neatly. In areas where curves were more prevalent more burnishing and rubbing down were required giving the surface a kind of "stressed" effect. I'm pretty sure that this will polish out though and I'm giving things a chance to dry overnight before continuing.

Sounds like this exercise may get you stressed again. You may have to calm yourself after each foiling session like you did after your exam.

I agree, this sounds like a recipe for stress Usually, kitchen tin foil has shiny and dull sides, which could probably be exploited to give different metal effects. Great effort Dazzled, this is interesting stuff!

I built one of these Fujimi kits some years ago in Finnish markings and it was a great kit to build. The foil method you are using is one that I have always wanted to try but never got around to.

Re: Dazzled's Mig-21PF
Thanks for the encouragement guys. As I'm getting better at it, foil coating is getting quite enjoyable if a little time consuming.
I was unhappy with the original finish at the front so I did it again using BMF.
It's still not quite there but it's an improvement over what it was before.
I followed this up with a bit more along the fuselage and the tops of the wings. I'm quite pleased that I've found a method to it now. I did read up quite a bit about the foil method beforehand but none of it really prepared me for trying it out. Good old trial and error to the rescue
Unfortunately, I've had to call a halt for today as I have to be up at 4:30am but I'm sure I'll have time for another session tomorrow .

Nice one D, that is starting to look pretty effective. How to articles are useful for showing the rudiments, but it's only hands on that the modeller discovers just how tough some of these jobs can be

That's looking good! I've never tried that foiling idea, but it's effective on your Mig.

That's something I must try at sometime.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Re: Dazzled's Mig-21PF
It always amuses me that Soviet psychologists chose that funny turquoise colour for the cockpit to reduce stress on the pilot. Modellers trying to match it, on the other hand, seem to suffer increased stress in trying to match the colour!

Hopefully, I'll get some Akan paints soon. That'll reduce the stress a bit

Heritage do them £17.99 for 6 covering WWII through to modern Soviet / Russian. They will be at Tellford, plus they are on Ebay. I have a set that covers USSR 1978-1989Dazzled wrote:Hopefully, I'll get some Akan paints soon. That'll reduce the stress a bit

Re: Dazzled's Mig-21PF
Hopefully I'll be at Telford and will check them out. I have three 1/48th Soviet kits in the stash, SU-7, MiG-15 and MiG-21, that are all gagging for the right coloured cockpit paint.shangos70 wrote:Heritage do them £17.99 for 6 covering WWII through to modern Soviet / Russian.
