Toby's Skyraider "Finished"

Post by TobyC »

Trusty old 1/72 Airfix kit that comes with US Navy and USMC markings but I'm not sure if the Navy markings are for the Vietnam war or somewhere a bit earlier. I found these https://www.hannants.co.uk/product/ESP72030; but are they correct for Vietnam? If not can anyone recommend where I can find some as the ones with the kit are a tad aged.

Welcome aboard with this venerable oldie Toby. I have this kit hiding in the stash myself and I look forward to seeing your efforts with it. I think the kit markings are possibly pre-Vietnam. I can't seem to get through on your Hannants link but I'll try again as my internet has been playing up today.

Edit - got through but it appears that those decals are for Stateside machines in 1958. It might be worth giving the Hannants site a further perusal. I'll also have a look myself.
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Thanks Shaun. I think I've found some. Just hope they get here in time.

That's great, I hope they get to you OK. I've just had a butchers on the Hannants site but they have nothing suitable.

Yes. A brute of an aircraft. Saw one at the Shoreham airshow last month. Never realised how big it was.

They certainly are big brutes but perfect for the job that they were given in 'Nam.

Another trip down memory lane. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. If memory serves this was one of the few that actually saw some paint when I built it as a kid

In my short return to modelling I have never come across a kit with so many pronounced rivets and panel lines.

Always loved the Skyraider for all the bits of weaponry that could be hung of it, good luck with the build and will be watching with anticipation FF

Yes it is a bit of an old codger Toby, but, like a glamorous grandmother, with a bit of TLC and given enough time it should scrub up OK

Wings on. A good fit in most places but those rivets may need some more sanding.
Cockpit is very rudimentary but I've added a joystick, seatbelts and painted some notional instruments on the panel.

Hi Toby

That kits a blast from the past, I recall building it for the first time back in the early 70's, are you building it wings folded or spread?
