Re: Splash's scooter
Sorry for the lack of updates, my other build has taken up more time that I thought.
This really is a nice kit, to give the bland grey a bit of variation I have used post shading, this will be toned down by the addition of a thin grey filter .
Regards Splash

Nice one Splash, you're becoming a bit of a dab hand at these airbrush shading effects!

Re: Splash's scooter
I have added the white tonight and panicked when the carpet monster had eaten 1/3 of the kit, luckily it had just hid it with parts in another kit, I suspect it's like a squirrel stocking up for the winter.

Re: Splash's scooter
I thinned down my base coat grey to about 50:50 and drop the pressure right down low then gave the post shading a light blow over to reduce the effect, I also used it on the white as post shading.

Cheers guys.
Here is what the underside is looking like after a light grey post shade. Airfix has done a great job on the detail in the wheel wells, a brown pin wash should make the detail pop out.

Cool! Whose brand of wash will you use?

Re: Splash's scooter
I just use normal Tamiya acrylic paints, thinned down until it runs like very thin skimmed milk and drop the pressure on the compressor to the point where it will still atomise the paint but not spit (if you have the pressure to high and the airbrush to close the paint it will pool or spread out and look like spider legs).
The trick is use lots of fine coats and don’t get too close you want the wash to mist onto the surface so as not to cover the detail underneath.
For the pin wash I will use Burnt Umber or Paynes Black oil paint thinned down to the consistency of black coffee (no milk or sugar ) When buying oil paints for washes buy a good quality artist brand, the cheap paints you can get in the likes of the £1 shop do not thin or work as well, the artist quality paints are more expensive but they will last you a lifetime as you use so little.

Re: Splash's scooter
That looks really excellent. I agree with your comments re the artist's oils, the cheaper brands don't work as well for washes etc. I have some Windsor and Newton oils that I've had since the '90's, which I use to weather military vehicles that are still going strong with plenty left in the tubes. The paints weren't particularly cheap to buy at the time but only a very small amount of the paint thinned with white spirit is required for the desired effect.

Re: Splash's scooter
Now the decals are on I'm happy with the amount of post shading I had added.
I do hope Airfix adds more of these A4's to their catalogue as they really are nice and would make a perfect blitz kit.
