Splash's forgotten Wessex Mk 5

Post by splash »

This kit has been in my box of unfinished kits for far to long.

Here is the progress to date I planned to build it with its blades and tail folded.

Nice detail on that kit - which is it? It'll look good folded.

Italeri seem pretty good at 1/72 helicopter kits so I've heard - looking forward to seeing this one done!

They do make good kits but they do make errors for example the tail rotors on their Wessex kits all turn the wrong way and the Wessex is a HU5 not a UH5 plus they got the squadron names wrong. It's not a biggy unless like me you served with the squadrons then you take it personal

The kit is well detailed and by sorting out the air intake grill and adding all the pipes and wires on the outside that have been added over the years makes a good looking model.

Not the 1/72 British Army Apache - it's the American prototype AH-64D with different decals, not the WAH-64!

This Wessex looks pretty nice though!

What colour have you painted it?

(Also, what ship did you serve on? And did you do a tour in NI?)

That looks very promising Splash and looks to be one of Italeri's better helo kits.

However, did someone mention the Italeri British Army Apache? (beware, also available in an Airfix box) Please, noooooooooooooooo!!!!!

It would have been Tamiya paint but I can't remember which one

For the Falklands I was flying with 846 NAS in Seaking Mk4's we sailed down on HMS Fearless but disembarked and operated from ashore from what we called Eagle bases that consisted of the Pilot, Aircrewman & 6 maintainers all living in the same tent.

I missed out on NI as the Wessex squadron I was on covered the Northern Flank and spent most of our time in Northern Norway.

I remember this from the Falklands GB Splash. It's already looking great and I'm sure it will be a stunning model when you've worked your usual magic over it.

Love that paint work Alan. Turning out like the workhorse it really was.

Any progress to report Splash?

It looks great already and a little push could see this beauty completed :) .

Now the CBK GB and my weekend in London marching at the Cenotaph is over I can get back to the bench.

To get the things moving, I will start adding the decals this should give me the kick up the rear I need.
