Welcome to the Sanding Old Airfix Kits Club. I'd like to say that there are great benefits to membership but, in all honesty, you'd be better off down the pub
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

I just picked up the MPC US version the other day of this from the 1970s.
Quite a bruiser of a kit.

I've got this kit and I won't be building it. So if you need some spares let me know. I've even got some metal Browning 303s lying around somewhere.BlohmWolf wrote:Ian wrote:Have you finished it yet?
Good Heavens! No. I'm scrounging around for a lost wheel and looking for replacements.
Enjoyment over accuracy. That's my motto
Re: Blohm's 1/24 Airfix Spitfire
Airfix Customer Service is top notch. I picked up the Spitfire Super kit years ago when MPC had tokens printed on the sides of kit boxes. Collect 50 and you sent in for the Big Spitfire. Mine came with cracked windscreen so in the pile she went. Last year I wrote Hornby on a lark and explained the problem. They sent me two sets of clear sprues and they were under no obligation to do this. So it might be worth a try.
By the way, the MPC boxing of the Super Kits were so flimsy I bought flat plastic totes to keep each kit in.

Besting 60 years of mediocre building of average kits in the stand off scale

Thanks for everyone's help!
I'll get some photos of progress up tonight. As I am finally free of doing anything.

I would imagine so Ian, he's probably just run out of battery power for his camera. There aren't very many parts to these old Airfix kits. Bit of sanding, a splash of paint, one or two decals and the job's a good 'unIan wrote:Is it finished yet?

I'm gradually working on the wings, but I will get some pictures uploaded.
And yes Shaun, my camera has run out of battery power. It seems to have one of the longest charging, then shortest usage battery I've ever seen in a phone.

Re: Blohm's 1/24 Airfix Spitfire
But Never the less, I still can upload pictures:
I know it isn't pretty. But I have to juggle around going to the bench, and getting some important stuff completed as well. So I only had enough time to fit on the engine panels and begin scratch building!
Hideous! A clamp that was implied had gather CA around it. Which at first I paniced, but seeing as it was only CA. It was sanded off and filled in a small sink mark. So mistake that went BTE. (Better then Expected) Also, you can just see the wings coming together in the background:
I think the rivets are going to disappear once I finish sanding. A small price to pay to get a extremely smooth surface for which I will apply paint and decals.
The engine panels refused to fit at first, but nothing sanding and trimming with a No-10 Blade didn't fix.
THe engine panels were soaked in Hot water for about 5-6 minutes to defy warping and bad fit, then applied on when still warm, then persuaded into place then superglued on. (Even then, it wanted to still jump off)
Now. Where is that cup of tea?

You don't have time for a cup of tea! Mind you, you could have dunked those engine panels in it to soften them!

Ian....
Why do I feel like you are pestering me until completion time.
Anyway, I've never tried Tea and injection moulded plastic. I think biscuits might be slightly more edible.

By the way, is it done yet?
I can't talk! We had a Superkit GB a few years ago. I only just managed my -190 in the 6 months we had. I know how long these kits take to build so please excuse my frivolity. It's all in jest!

You know, I was considering the 190 as my choice of first big airfix kit. But me, being me, choose a spitfire that has so much flash you could make another kit of it!
The weather over in Tasmania has been quite bad, we have had rain, followed by rain, followed by hail. So tomorrow might be better.
Also, it's not done yet.
