'69 Dodge Daytona - B-17 Style
I picked up this 1969 Dodge Daytona earlier in the year and as the title suggests I'll be giving it a B-17 colour scheme. I have a few decal options for the B-17 so I haven't decided which ones to use just yet.

Wow. That has a bigger wing than a B-17.

With that high nose it will probably try to take off like a B-17 when you put your foot down.

Why does it have a clothes rack on the back????
Looking forward to this build!

Surely with that pointy nose and twin-tail rear wing, it's crying out for a P-38 scheme?

Some very good points from you all there!
Less than an hour before kick off where I am. Thought I'd upload the sprue shots I took this afternoon. As you can see there are quite a few parts most of which will not be seen. That's the norm with car kits.
These will get a wash in the morning.

Re: '69 Dodge Daytona - B-17 Style
Brilliant choice of car and colours Narayan mate! I'll be doing something worryingly similar.
The new nose and the wing on the back were aerodynamic aids to help it go faster on the NASCAR circuits, which worked a treat (a rumoured 200mph was achieved). But to compete in NASCAR in those days you had to build and sell a number of street versions in the showroom to pass homologation or else these mods would be illegal on the circuit, and the street version they sold to Joe Public became the 'Daytona'. Plymouth did the same to their standard Roadrunner and it became the 'Superbird'
The "Winged Warriors", as they were known, did not compete for long in NASCAR. Because of their exceptional speed and performance that whipped everybody, NASCAR subsequently changed the rule book, effectively banning all of the "Aero Cars" from competition by the end of 1970.
Incidently, if you had one of these road-going Daytona's now, with the more desirable 426 Hemi engine option, you could comfortable ask over $300,000 for it! Highly collectable nowadays. But that's 1/1 scale.....
Really looking forward to this Narayan!

In case you're not familiar with the type, if you look at it and in your minds eye, squint a bit and remove the big rear wing and the aerodynamic pointed nose (revealing a flat front with a conventional grill) you will probably see that in reality, it's a 1969 Dodge Charger (The bad-guy car in Bullit and the Dukes of Hazzard car). Narayan's photo of the bodyshell gives it away.Prisca wrote:Why does it have a clothes rack on the back????

That body shape would merit so many schemes, and looks a stunning model in it's own livery. Gonna have to keep a look out for one of those.

Great car Narayan, very American muscle and I can see the Dodge Charger lurking under there. This will look way cool (oh man, there I am getting down with the kids ) with a B-17 scheme.

Great choice but I have to say it looks more like a fast jet than a heavy bomber to me.

Re: '69 Dodge Daytona - B-17 Style
I know what you mean Tim but I'm quite sold on the B-17 scheme.
I've started putting the engine together. There are actually 3 options with this kit. Custom, stock and competition. I'm not too fussed really because the main difference can be seen on the top. Which will be covered by the bonnet.

Yeah, a lot of the American car kits from Monogram AMT, MPC and the like had the 'Build it three ways' deal, the one I am about to start has 'Stock, Street Machine or Drag Racer' options, or something like that.Narayan wrote:I've started putting the engine together.
