Lancfan's old Airfix USN Sea King ***FINISHED***

Post by lancfan »

My builds for the GB will be a type 4 boxing of the venerable Airfix Sea King in NASA
recovery markings and the latest boxing of the same kit to be built side by side.
The subject of this build will be the type 4 boxing of the classic kit number 03010-6 in USN markings as the famous "66" this is the box and sprue shot ready for sunday.

Useful extras in the old kit that you don't get in the new kit is the Mk44 torpedo's and the rescue net (not used by the British as we had a different type)
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

Nice choice!
I built this Sea King (different boxing 03043) in Norwegian markings many years ago and really enjoyed it IIRC.

I did this one for a museum display a few years ago - I'll see if I can find the photo...

I've looked at a few of these old boxing's and the fit issues don't seem to be as apparent. Hope you can get the decals to look something like. Not much sun for bleaching this time of year.

Had a late start due to finishing off my Heinkel 111 SB and Mirage GB models but am back on track now, first report tomorrow.
This model will be a blast from the past for me also Shaun and should fit on the shelf just nicely alongside my Airfix Apollo 11 LM model.

Here we go then, this is one of two examples of the same kit that have been moulded decades apart. This kit is a type 4 boxing of the original USN SH-3D release and is as Airfix intended with sharp crisp parts and should make a good comparison to the current kit from the now worn tool. The first step will be to remove the rivets and smooth down the fuselage sides to more resemble those of a modern kit.
Image

This model will be in Apollo recovery guise so the sonar tube will be omitted and the hole in the floor has been filled in, unless the side door is left open very little will be visible within the grey void and as I intend to leave this door closed there is not much point in indulging in too much interior detail. The floor has now been treated as described above and the interior has been fitted and the fuselage is now assembled, the halves fitting together with a satisfying click, so far no filler will be needed to fill gaps on this model. Unfortunately I accidentally deleted the raw picture of the finished cockpit & floor pan before editing it and that image is now lost as I had already glued the fuselage together. As the glue dries on the closed fuselage on the SH-3D I will bring the new Sea King build to the same stage.

Hi David

I hope you don't mind me pointing something out.

Airfix made the kit with lots of functions like the opening rear door and the sonar that goes up and down when you turn the rotor.

The problem is to make the door open they added an extra runner along the bottom edge that the real a/c does not have, if you are gluing the door closed then you could leave the bottom runner off.

Regards Alan

Not at all Alan, I am not well up on helicopters and did not realise that, have now checked just how this looks on pictures of the full-size and both models will be modified today. Many thanks.

This is the model at close of play last night with the tail assembly in place, cleaning the joint over the engine cowlings removed the vent grill behind the rotor head, this has been replaced with a piece of 150 grit sandpaper.

Alan told me of an error I had made on my Sea King models, I did not realise that the lower rail on the side door was invented by Airfix to allow the door to open and was not present on the full size, therefore this has been corrected on both these models before work continues.

Looking good so far David, a good fit always helps.

The model now has its canopy in place, unlike the new release behind it this kit went together without a hitch.
