OT's Sprinbok Puma

Post by Old_Tonto »

Here is my entry for this years rotor-head group build.

Image

No idea how old this kit is but I can remember it from childhood, still looks good though.

Here are the contents minus the decals which I won't be using.

Image

It occoured to me that I have not done a South African helicopter yet & it will make a change from all thoses Mirages.
This will be a straight out of the box build apart from the decals, as delivered to the SAAF.

Image

If I can source a pair of air filter - I think they came with the Heller boxing of this kit, I will add those.
So if you have a spare pair let me know. ;-)
I will hopefully get cracking on this tonight.

That South African scheme looks great!
The kit is from 1973, and I see you have the first boxing. :)

I like that you're starting this tonight, so I can avoid the mistakes I'll most probably make! :ha:

I got cracking on this one yesterday & it is a refreshing change after the limited run Mirage I am doing.

Although it is a 1973 kit the parts fit is excellent. It may be because I have the original boxing, not sure how well the mouldings have lasted. Maybe Sissel will lit us know as she is doing a later edition of this kit.

So I started with the interior. I didn't like the all black interior so I went with this blue\grey colour as I have seen some SADF birds with it. I believe some of their Pumas were bought a civilian versions so that might explain it.

Image

The pilots will be installed once finished but other than seat belt I am not planning any more work here.
if it looks too empty once the front is on I may revisit the cockpit.

Not doing anything to the main cabin as the doors will be shut & life is busy right now.
I have made a start on the exhaust & rotor assembly but again am not planning anything fancy.

Making progress on this one. The parts fit is reasonable but needs a bit of clamping to hold everything together whilst the glue dries.

I painted the exhaust & rotor hub black then dry brushed on some silver to give it that used look. Then attached it, fit was good.

Image

So once that was attached I close up the fuselage:

Image

Again the fit is ok. Just a little sanding & filler will be needed.

However the underside has a very wide gap and some serious persuasion was required to get it to stay together.
It was clamped overnight & squeezed in a vice. Very gently! ;-)

Image

It is together now so I am at that annoying masking the canopy stage.

I will leave out the fuselage windows as those supplied are badly formed. I will use some PVA to form them after all the painting is done.

More to follow. :smilie_flagge3:

It looks great OT. This is one of those "happy memories" kits for me. I built a couple when I was nought but a young lad and I always thought that it was one of the best kits Airfix made. sadly, and naturally, neither has survived.

The round one is an observation window. The early RAF Pumas had this but later some sort of equipment box was placed over the top of it. The kit should have a clear part for it.

The one in floor I presume is for dropping stuff from inside the cabin via a trap door.

The square one under the floor is so you can see under the a/c when load lifting and also can be used for abseiling through, inside the cabin there is a hatch you can open.
My work bench is starting to look like Portsmouth Naval Dockyard.

The square one is for getting rid of unwanted passengers and the round one is under the toilet :ha:

Well, I think it all has to do with espionage... :ha:

I'm also gonna do mine with closed door, so wont fuss with interior in the back. Those small windows wont show much anyway.
I'll watch out for the underside gap.

I guess any solids once in the slipstream would impact the tail rotor. Literally hitting the fan. :-D

Are the holes for putting a finger and thumb into to hold it whilst painting?

I have made a little progress on this. Overall I am very pleased with the fit, these sponsons were a very good fit on what could have been a tricky curve:

Image

Contrast that with the front glazing piece:

Image

The whole piece seems undersized. I don't think it is anything I have done as the fuselage fit is good & the side glazing pieces fit well. :frown:
The gap is smaller on the other side even though I concentrated on getting the nose piece squared to the fuselage.
I will see if I can squeeze it closer at the top once the glue dries at the bottom. It will still need some filler though, PVA should do it.

The only other slight issue I had was these 'Thingies' (sorry rotor heads - no idea what they are!) on the tail boom.
They look like handles but I can't imagine they are.

Image

The holes needed to be drilled out which is not mentioned in the instructions.
Also, anyone know what colour this light (I'm assuming) should be?

On the whole though a pretty straight forward build so far with just the usual problems for a kit of this vintage.

The next thing I need to tackle is the door rails which look ridiculously oversized. I will refer to James's previous build for ideas.

Looks like the console or floor could be fouling the inside the nose?

Oh dear, that is nasty with the front glazing, I'll be aware of that.
Glad to hear rest of fit is good, hope it is on mine too. :)
