I agree, I really like the frosted plastic, just not for a high gloss finish.

I saw one of these kits in a LHS yesterday, and though I own a stable of Mustangs this one now is looking like a good proposition. Lovely work as always, Migrant.

Lovely work. Great captions and photos too, easy for us mortals to follow along. :)

Thanks guys!

Slow but steady progress. I primed the model with white, masked out the invasion stripes area then mixed a silver shade for the fuselage. It's different from the wings which are polished natural metal; the fuselage is finished in a fairly flat silver paint, so I decanted some Tamiya lacquers and mixed some white and silver together. It doesn't show well in the photo here, but it seems to match the pics of the real aircraft pretty well.

Image

I then spent a good hour masking for the blue areas, which was pretty tedious, trying to match the photos and freehand cutting the masks out of Parafilm. Ten minutes of spraying Tamiya blue and it looks like this.

Image

Lots more masking to do yet: the yellow noes area next, then the black stripes, then the polished NMF wings. Should have gone for an Olive Drab over Neutral Grey scheme... Image

I'm also stunned at the result of that masking job!

Thanks guys! More masking and painting. Here's the very attractive masking job I did for spraying the black stripes (I also used gloss black as the undercoat for the polished aluminum on the wings):

Image

After all the masking had been peeled off, I was left with this. Quite pleased with it overall, there's very little touching up to do. Some detail painting to follow – undercarriage, exhausts etc – then the decals will go on.

I know it is terribly inaccurate, but I love the blue. So 1970s warbird.

Sweet work on everything.

(How do actually get a mask that clean without getting paint spills or rough edges!?)
