Big Beautiful Doll

Post by fredk »

I think I'll start off with this; P51D 'Big Beautiful Doll'.
I believe there were at least two preserved airframes carrying these markings; one, a flying P51 based at Duxford and a static one which hung in the Imperial War Museum in London. I saw those two on the same day a number of years ago, and I've seen photos of a flying one which appeared to differ from the one I saw at Duxford.

This is the base kit; an Airfix 1/72 P51;

This has been in one of my 'to do next' boxes so the plastic frames have been cut away and there are some replacement parts from different P51 kits;

These are the decals; I think they came from one of the Airfix sets. I got them from another modeller;

Beautiful decal sheet. Good luck.

Hope to post up some progress photos soon.
In the meantime can somebody please confirm or deny that the colour of the rudder and tailplanes is black?
So far, through photos I have identified one static and defiinately two possibly, three flying [now two] machines wearing these colours. Some very subtle differences to the scheme.

Good start. I didn't know it had recessed panel lines.

Looks good, how was the fit? Did you have to use much/any filler?
