The Blitzbau House - BenchQueen Special

Post by Old_Tonto »

In a change from the usual BlitzFodder, (not strictly within the rules  ) we are attempting to finish off as many BenchQueens as we can in a 24 hour period.

By BenchQueens I mean kits that have stalled for one reason or another. This idea was inspired by the recent Getting it done group build which highlighted to me the vast number of started kits I had hidden around the man cave.

So far I have selected:
  • Airfix 1/72 Hurricane (old tool) [65% done]
    Airfix 1/48 Corsair [85% done]
    Airfix 1/72 Sabre [50% done]
Airfix 1/72 Puma (Whirlybird group build) [80% done]
A bit of an Airfix theme going on there!
There are about a dozen more I could take with me but space is limited.

I will also kick off my secret Santa build if I get a chance. Cosmic will chip in with a few unfinished builds too.

We will be having a bit of a movie fest too, catching up on all the flicks we have missed this year & watching a few classics to. We have to make use of Paul's MASSIVE television, it would be a crime not to!

We plan to meet in the local hostelry for a pre-blitz breakfast before getting stuck in.
Hope you can all tune in.

Apologies for the late start. Cosmic has had to go into work which is a shame as he was my lift to the Blitzbau House. So I had to wait for the wife to come back from her run & clean out the chickens before she could drop me off.

Any way here now, just had an all day breakfast so am setting up. These are my victims today:

I will explain the history of these builds & why they stalled as I go along.

The Sabre looks like it'll be quick to finish.
Good luck!

I have started with the Sabre & have remembered why I stopped with this one.

CANOPY!

Image

The cockpit tub is a great fit as is the seat so I cannot understand why the canopy will not fit past this point. :???:

If I close the canopy it sticks up at the rear. I don't want to do the canopy open as the pit is not the best.

Image

I also had problems fitting the wing as there was a big step at the rear under the fuselage. Anyway, I fettled that after much filling & sanding. I think the canopy can be squashed into place so all I need to work out is how to hold it in place.

If I can do that it is ready for primer. Once painted I have a nice set of decals to do a Korean War South African example.

Image

Onto the Corsair now.

Apologies guys, just realized that I forgot to include a clock.

I think the Bench Queen idea is a good one for a blitz OT, something a bit different. With the Sabre, is the canopy fouling the IP? Fair it in with some filler - we won't notice :ha:
Doing - Tamiya 1/35th Universal Carrier.

Thanks Shaun. It's just an idea to clear the workbench really.

The Sabre canopy has been attached and is ready to prime but lunch first:

Image

I have been cleaning up the Puma. Does anyone know what this hole is for?

Image

These are the rather nice but small decal sheet from MAV Decals. Essential for all things South African.

Image

I also started to paint the underside of the Hurricane with some very thin Xtracrylix paint. RAF Sky that is.

Image

Just about to prime the Sabre then pop out for a pint. More to follow.

As far as I know, it's the APU (Auxillary Power Unit) exhaust OT.

Should there be an exhaust or something visible there?

I got the Sabre primed, might get the silver on soon. Not sure how long to leave it.

I am sorting the windows on the Puma. Here you can see the internal ladder.

Image

I have also painted another coat on the Hurricane underside. Its hard work doing multiple models at the same time. 8-)

Time for an update:

Image

Here is the Corsair. This is my attempt to simulate the over painted roundals. I will put the RAF roundals over the top. I lightened some midnight blue with white & sprayed it over the kit decals. I have had to soak them in MikroSol to get them to settle down. Still not sure how it will look. :???:
The model is going to represent a RNZAF example as part of the British & Commonwealth Occupation Forces, Japan 1946.

The Sabre is now silver:

Image

I will leave it overnight & give it a second coat first thing tomorrow.

The third coat of sky is drying on the Hurricane. I really like this old school Kit, no wheel wells at all.
I have also painted the propellor hub white in preparation for the red. I am doing Tuck's aircraft as provided in the box.

Image

I started this kit with my daughter about 6 years ago but I figured she won't finish it now. Next up black paint.

Now for the Puma. The kit windows were very badly distorted so I am trying Krystel Klear as a replacement although weather they will be dry in time for this blitz I don't know.

Image

That's it for now. It must be grub time.

Evening OT. I'll keep you company through the night as I'm stuck at my desk for the next 11 hours :(
Nice to see you're making the most of the healthy food options before New Year!
There looks to be some good work going on here, too!

Great work going on OT. Re the Puma APU, the exhaust doesn't sit proud of the hole as far as I can see from photos, in order to simulate it I would insert some tubing and cut it off level with the hole. Or otherwise ignore it and concentrate instead on that take out :ha: What are you having there? kebab meat?

Great work on the Puma, and everything else!
Yes, I'm sure that's kebab meat, Shaun. Makes me hungry. I'm gonna have some Cognac Cake, then head out for an evening walk. No strong wind for a change.
Confused as always, and somewhere in hiding on the Scandinavian peninsula...
